Yo fanfic thread, I'm posting this again. Sorry about spamming this post, but I figure I might as well, just in case.

What are the most traumatic things Ash has experienced? Y'know, in terms of things that would be traumatic to an actual 10-15 year old, and not an anime kid?
It's been a long time since I've seen the anime from the start, so I'm only remembering the highlights, really.
So far I've got:
>faced with imminent death via angry swarm of birds
>gets trapped on a sunken ship and declared dead
>gets hit by a chandelier and actually dies
>(movie 1 omitted because mewtwo erased his memory)
>gets told he's the only one who can save the whole goddamn planet (and the rest of M2000)
>mom gets kidnapped
>entei tries to murder him
>unown in general are creepy as fuck
>tries to sacrifice himself to save the magic tree, I guess
>watches lucario die instead
>actually drowns trying to save a giant sea temple
>gets shot into space and almost freezes to death
>watches victini sacrifice itself to save him
>almost stops existing at one point
>Lysandere tries to mind control him and use him as a weapon
>Lysandere in general

So, obviously, if Ash wasn't an anime character he'd be super fucked up already, but obviously, I'm missing some stuff. What did I miss?

I'm jonesing to writing some trauma fics.

Actually it has gone pretty well compared to the last few years. Working on actual writing ended up with a couple of publications, and the meta level has taken a more definitive and functional form.

The extra activity also allowed me to become more involved in other things and that resulted in a couple invitations to co-write / RP for some literary adventures and stuff, and an invitation for a worldbuilding project as a potential lorewriter, but those will be 2018 so I'm only partially counting them here.

All in all it was a good but unfortunately very short year.

Well, I can't really recall any more experiences from the anime series that could be considered traumatic. At most, there was the Kyogre-Groudon encounter in the anime that ended up with a possessed Pikachu. There's the Evil King possession thing at the end of the Frontier arc, but I don't recall if Ash was self-aware for that.

oh man, I try to ignore that episode, because Ash is just... such a dipshit in that episode. It was the first episode in a long time that I watched and it was basically:

This, I'm sorry to say. I only got one comment last time, and the anon didn't explain when I asked him to clarify, so I still don't know what he was talking about.

I'll take anything I can get, and if there's a superlist of "ash almost died" episodes, I'd defer to that instead of being annoying, but unfortunately I haven't been able to find one.

Great! I got a lot of shit done this year. I filled out my ffn and ao3 profiles with more work that has all gotten progressively more competent compared to where I was in January, established a more regular writing schedule over the last few months and have learned an awful lot about a variety of facets of my writing and its failings.

I finished Au Coup Par Coup, something I didn't think I'd actually do this year (I expected it to be done halfway through next year) and I got _a lot_ of shit planned as I continued to work on it. Shit I am very much so looking forward to working on. Should be fun.

Next year's writing goals are more of the same. Produce a steady stream of content and get better at writing. Eventually I'll be able to approach my actual original work with a far more competent understanding of the areas I was weak with and hopefully a very strong understanding of the areas I was already good at.

I have a few more goals set for next year as well, but those will become known when they do. No sense spoiling it now.

I conceptualized a story with a setting I found interesting, but I'm worried that the pokemon will end up overshadowed by the humans and their drama. To combat this, I've decided to do something I thought I'd never do: changed the POV to first person. Objectively, in the particular case, yes; that's what's sustained me in this endeavor since 2010. But I would be remiss to accept only one perspective on any matter, and doubly so to be selective of only the top score among all perspectives experienced.

• Those who don't like it? They turn away unsatisfied. (I see this in the comparison between hits on a Chapter 1 versus the lowest-hit chapter in my FFN stats.)
• Those who liked it at first but changed their minds? Worse; they turn away dissatisfied. (Case studied; my follower who ultimately suffered after E/V revealed wholly its designs to assemble a particular sensation and then sacrifice it to its greater message and purpose.)
• Those who like a first work and return for another piece—later or from catalog—and find it lacking, wanting, or dull? What a swing, that is, from 1-for-1 to 1-for-2, or -3, etc.; a regard so quickly tarnished by the very variety that ought to broaden appeal and defy staleness, because truly all that was offered was, e.g., "Gardevoir" among the tags, or another factor which simply outweighed in the singular case frailty or failing otherwise endemic to the works.
In a way, I fail one time more for each of them.

E/V guy returned this year, and (highly irregular for me) I let him preview the first scene in O/C's draft; and it was not gripping. Since the annexed introduction runs four chapters between where it begins and meets with O/C's original starting point, what does that say about the first 25k? It says that my feelings of discomfort are not unfounded, but as my method resists altering what's written (with said annex being proof of what happens when I try to) I see little means to escape this story to a better place.

I remain and persist at it because such is my nature; but my expectations are blunted by empirical results, and those rare few readers are all the external motivation I have left.

If you shoot from the pokemon's POV, you're effectively avoiding portraying said drama in favor of portraying the shadow it casts upon said pokemon. If the way you write chapters is compatible, you might be able to present a more complete impression of the circumstances of your story by switching from focusing on the humans when they create said drama and then having a Pokemon-POV chapter that presents the drama's consequences. It must be handled deftly and consistently to read well, but would put emphasis on how trainer behavior impacts pokemons' lives without either making portraying the drama difficult (as it would be if shot only through a pokemon's un-savvy eyes) or making shifting the focus from humans to pokemon a matter of leaning on the camera and key lighting forcefully enough that the reader always notices when you want them to pay attention to the pokemon, which is the "overshadowed" you're currently (and rightfully) concerned about.

you can do everything in 3rd Limited you can in 1st, and in 3rd it's more acceptable to bounce between POVs to put the camera over the shoulder of the principle actor for every scene, as is an actually appropriate application of perspective. It ssounds like perspective trickery is a crutch that you're leaning on because you're afraid you'll never end up writing a scene where a pokemon is important enough to WARRANT the perspective. You're putting the cart before the Ponyta, here, or whichever other pack-animal-mon might actually feature in your work.

Why don't you just structure your story in such a way a pokemon's perspective becomes inevitable at least for several scenes, instead of constraining yourself to the point that you're now no longer actually portraying the central conflict but just the follow-in effects sit has on others?

Done alright on my printed progress. Without getting too sentimental or long-winded, it has been a successful year. Finished the Protector series begun circa 2010, and somehow managed to publish a requested post-finale by means of reviving a five year old project. A friend's idea which manifested in the eleventh hour.

Begun work on a new project this past summer, it's coming along well. Heaven's Slice is due for a chapter 12 update while I give this flu the what for. HS got off to a rocky start, but with effort and diligence I believe it will make a fine story. I have readers to thank for helping remaster the early chapters. I won't let them down.

In one word looking back: Satisfied.

Overall, keeping a rhythm of a chapter per thread has benefited the consistency of my publication output. I don't think the quality has suffered (too much, I'm only human) and there's enough time to make edits while maintaining forward momentum. It's all about willpower. Of course, readers, reviewers, editors, and advice-sharers are always in high demand. Wish to improve my storytelling ability and become a better writer though practice.

As for the one word, this time facing forward: Ambitious.

Here's to more fanfiction in 2018 for auld lang syne.

In all seriousness, I think I got something good going since August. No actual story as of yet, but the master document that I have created for it is going well thus far. To date, it has been my most well planned story thus far, and if I can get across the initial hurdle of actually writing the damn thing, I might go places.

My goals for next year is to finish up this master document, then write the actual story.

Here's hoping my actual writing isn't shit, but I am hopeful for the future.

Minimal at best. I started on two stories but one's on hiatus as I redo the other but the rewrite is going good.
Unlike the previous version, it doesn't feel like a slog to write and like Barred Hearts, I like the characters this time around. It's probably because I got rid of the chuff that wasn't necessary or just felt wrong and redid the setting so it actually made some sort of sense.

Actually making progress on both my stories and starting up a couple more I have in mind. One involves the "Pokemon IRL" concept I spoke of months ago and another is about going in depth on the biology of certain species of pokemon.

Pretty great! Now that I'm looking back at everything, I'm really happy with myself!

- Got a bunch of fun smutty ideas in writing and people really seem to like them.
- Finished a 40K twine text game that was only like 8K long when the year started.
- Built up the stamina and patience to write longer smutty fics.
- Went from having like 250 people following my stuff to just a little short of 1100.
- Started an HF page and got a functioning back up for my stuff.
- Got a few PMs with people confessing I've gotten the fabled Omega-Nut out of them.
- People I've admired the work of for ages have read and enjoyed my stuff.
- Got two pieces of fan art.
- Learned some simple Java so it'll be a little easier to make more complicated text games in the future.
- 35 Fapfics written in total

This year was pretty awesome for me. Hoping to get less shit at proofing my work and to do something special focused on Hex Maniacs already.

My criticism lies in Rynn's actions here being causes of superficial conflicts.
• She doesn't want to sleep in, but doesn't set an alarm. (She seems savvy enough.)
• She fears public judgment, but presents herself to it by using a normally retreating activity (getting some fresh air) but brings with her the circumstance that she seems to fear (hearing "j'accuse!" from the non-degenerate public after being suspected of coming too near to her master) and then discusses and equivocates on the matter aloud in an open setting.
• She projects onto her ball a facet of her problem, but does not actually resolve the question it raises, favoring instead to chase her own (missing) tail by double-talking herself into non-action.
• She finally gets around to tabling the issue of trust between them, but it doesn't really get worked out any better than their simply choosing to be cool about it in the days leading up to this moment did.

She's making nuisance problems then offering soliloquy on them.

Although I'd say this whole piece is firing on seven cylinders—adequate but subtly lacking throughout—it's that last moment that really needed to hit the fan. It was the climax of the whole chapter, and it whimpered when it could've roared.

I'll make one change to the dialogue, and let you perceive what I see as a hint of the potential in this scene.
>“So, then… you really trust me?” She finally met him eye-to-eye and found his expression to be as serious as she had ever seen.
>But, it was not angry. “If I didn't trust you, at night you'd be in your ball instead of my bed. But what you did has cost us my faith in you; faith that took all the time we've been together to build. 2017 could have been better, in all honesty. I joined the writethread in late 2016, so 2017 was the first full year I spent here, and I initially hoped it would be pretty productive. Unfortunately, that didn't really pan out. I didn't do anywhere near as much as I wanted, and although I planned and wrote quite a bit of stuff in my spare time, almost all of it remains unfinished and unpublished.
That said, this year wasn't a total bust. I finally got around to finishing my Combee/Vespiquen story "Outcast of Comb Island", which I started last year, and I even managed to put out a new short story in the last thread. In addition, I became a beta reader for the first time. However, while I'm glad that I accomplished those things, I still feel disappointed that I didn't do more. I just hope I can turn that feeling into motivation in 2018.

Do better than I did this year. I want to write and publish more, read and review other people's stuff more, and generally get more involved around here. I should also figure out how to get over my chronic anxiety about showing my work to other people. Besides a general lack of motivation, I think that's the biggest obstacle for me in terms of writing.
I also hope to move beyond pastebin and start using a site more conducive to the whole fanfic thing, like FFN or AO3 (though I remember hearing that AO3 doesn't let just anyone make an account, and you need to jump through some hoops to do it, so maybe I'll just stick to FFN).
Lastly, I still want to pursue my initial goal, the reason I came here to begin with: become a better writer. Sort of a vague goal, but at least I have something to aim for.

>How do you feel about your progress over the last year? What are your writing goals for next year?

It went by a little slower than I would've liked in the second half of the year, but it was still respectable given the amount of stuff that had to be juggled outside of writing. Writing goal for next year is to try and go back to my old "chapter a fortnight" rough average for publishing, and to come within one arc away from closing out the third quarter of my story and start moving on into the final quarter where all the endgame events start happening.

On that note, I published an update to the existing arc of my fic, representing the third chapter of seven to be done before moving on to other locations in-setting:

Yeah I originally was looking in Pokemon Fanfics to find some cancerous shit (Which I found a few times and had a good laugh)

But I ran into this story which is about a Civil War in the Hoenn Region where an Anti Pokemon Western Army is fighting the Pro Pokemon Eastern Establishment Army. It is quite the ideological struggle!

Its not like the typical pokemon story where just Pokemon fight Peacefully, you actaully have Proper Soldiers with ACTUAL FUCKING GUNS shooting and killing Pokemon and crap!

So it is pretty violent and has "Blood, Tears, and Communication Issues" like you desire.

Of course it still has some typical pokemon stuff like trainer battles and "Trainer Bonds with Pokemon" but it aint shoved in your face and often doesn't stay peaceful for long...

Highly suggest ya to read this as it's actaully a story in where our own species aint complete bitches and have powers to fight back thanks to the Godgiven 2nd Admendment as even in our Real World Firearms are the great equalizer!

This actually is/will be a point in Honor and Good Sense, and is partially demonstrated in the prologue with Sierra going through a mystery dungeon with a shotgun. Another gun serves a plot purpose elsewhere, and it isn't the last readers will see of either firearm.

Traipsing's Au Coup Par Coup has a character who, amongst other things, kneecaps a Machoke and does up his bullets with the same items pokemon use to empower moves.

Meh. Yeah. I mean, he does have a personality, but Ash is the poster-boy of a MASSIVE franchise. The function of his station is to balance being a) bland enough that everyone can relate to him and b) JUST enough personality that people don't hate him for being boring. Just a tiny pinch of personality, you understand.
It's why he's never been swapped out, it's why his outfits are always (at least until SUMO) very similar to each other, why he always swaps out all his pokemon except pikachu, and why he got even more boring as the years went on.
He's not a character anymore, he's a figurehead.

I've read a couple stories that were actually fun, where the people played around with that, actually- most recently a story where Ash "becomes" Red, by just pretending to be someone else to avoid being recognized while trying to take down Team Rocket (Gary came along and became "Blue"), with no angst or drama involved. It was a mashup of the anime, the games and pokespe, and it was fun enough that I kept reading even though it was... pretty terribly executed.

Right now, I'm actually writing a story where Ash "got a little something extra from a legendary pokemon". It's your typical "ash can speak to pokemon" story, but hopefully not awful. I'm actually having a lot of fun with it.

Maybe I'll post a couple chapters eventually, but some early changes are that Ash catches Pikachu directly, instead of getting him from Prof. Oak, and Team Rocket decides to recruit him, instead of trying to catch pikachu.

I'm still up in the air about how close I should stick to the plot. Also a meta explanation about how Ash can get knocked around by pokemon so much and be fine, in a way that hopefully isn't too contrived.

I have two MCs for a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon fanfic and I feel like one of them needs to be improved a lot since he's cliched as fuck.

So basically he was an outlaw who used to steal and sell treasures as a way to survive through his vagrant life. He had friends who were outlaws for different reasons but the four of them were a tight-knit group even when things mess up. But he eventually gets arrested and stays there for a few years until the events of the first chapter happened where he decides to form a team with the other MC so that he can learn what it's like to not screw things up all the time.

I really am doing everything I can to avoid making him into an edgelord (i.e., he is often very childish, he leaps before thinking and he's shit at battling despite being a Fighting type) but I feel like I'm kind of at my limit on what I can do. What should I change about his story?

You could work on his motivations for being an outlaw. Maybe he was separated from his parents at a young age, and grew up well-meaning but terribly misguided, instead of just being Coldsteel the Pokemon by default. But I agree, a vagrant thief is something I've come across multiple times in Mystery Dungeon fics, and I don't even read Mystery Dungeon fics.

One of my very early ideas for his motivation to being an outlaw was that in his early life he grew up in a tribe full of the same Pokemon as him, but he was often considered the mongrel of the group since he was smaller and weaker compared to everybody else. He is skilled at agility but him being neglected by the others manifested brattiness and a need for attention. He ran off later on in life to find that need, which he admits later in the story that he was a coward for what he did. I kind of put off that idea though because I'm always thinking of better ideas for a motivation in him becoming an outlaw.

Subjectively, yes, because it's a sunflower, although it's in disguise.
The author's control is over the audience's experience, but it does not extend to the nature of the things portrayed.

Now, if character profile A is not attractive, and is transformed by alteration into A', such that it is indistinguishable from an alternative profile, B; when A' and B are the same, what difference does it make to say "I stuck with A but I fixed it" instead of "I rejected A and went with B instead"?

Then your protagonist is how he is now, and his character development portrayed during the story is his becoming "improved" by how he changes himself in response to the challenges he faces throughout the tale.

Being Ash is suffering tho, he has seen so much shit that it wouldn't be a suprise if he ends up like Archer. He's always helping people without rewards like fame or glory, no matter what he is unable to achieve his dreams, has seen people die, saw his only family member being kidnapped a monster, has died a lot of times, its a miracle the kid is still sane.
Most people hate him for not being a dexholder, or because they were cucked of manga adaptación.

Or you could take the lack of suffering at face value, ie being Ash isn't actually suffering, because he's too dense or stupid or oblivious for it to effect him. the problem with writing for canon characters is even writing something "realistic," in that he reacts differently than he does to these events, is writing the character OOCly because he self-evidently isn't suffering.

I'm writing campaign stuff for a PTU game, and I've gotten to the point where I need to fill a battle circuit with some trainer characters. You guys got any characters you'd like to birth vicariously through my thing?

Without giving too much away in case my players are reading here, the town the circuit is in is way up in the cold - think, like, just about as far north in Canada as is reasonably inhabitable by a large city. There's a college, which is the place's reason for being, but recently the battle (and accompanying contest) circuit expanded there because of ~~plot thing~~. That attracted a lot of less-scholarly people to the town. There's also a new casino there, which came following the population rise associated with the circuit. So anyone that would work as an out-of-placer or ties into that stuff would be good. Let me know if you need more info!

(Also I could just write a quick summary of the plot so far, I guess, if anyone cares. Sorry I don't have much else in the way of actual writing/fanfic to share; all my stuff is much too lewd for this Christian imageboard, if the rules are the same as they were last time I was around!)

It's still nice for prototyping, at least for me. But in general, yeah, way too much weirdness around it for me to want to use in production. Definitely wouldn't recommend writing a text game in it, from experience. Made a sick roguelike framework with it, though. My floor generation algorithms and Swing console-lookalike were *bitchin*. Still kinda want to try a Pokemon roguelike but it'd probably get C&D'd.

Characters are shaped by their environment and circumstances. They aren't just a certain appearance or model or attitude. When you take them out of their environment, place them in a drastically different scenario, that's as much OOC writing as making them act in ways they never acted before is OOC writing. It's why a good crossover with characters from different canons is so rare; you can't just focus on making them 'act correct' but you also need to set up the scenario in a way that allows continuity from the prior canon state to the new alternate state, then follow through on all the after-effects. The scenario you present here is so far outside the characters' usual environments that there's no meaningful way to preserve their characterization. In fact, even attempting to is bad writing; it's denying the character who they're standing in for the proper development and backstory in favor of shoehorning in something that doesn't belong.

In the end even if it was GOOD writing, it's still just (e.g.) a guy who looks like Guzma and has his name. It isn't Guzma. And the guy who looks like Guzma and has his name is taking up a space where a real actual character should be.

The other thing I know about Evangelion is that it's heavily based off of Ideon (which I have seen) and that the only new thing it adds is the psychological dimension.

Fanfiction writers used to be called textual poachers but many people have said already that that's wrong because there are no people who are more focused on canon and continuity than fanfic writers - even though they have the potential to break the canon and make a meaningful change to it.

Usually it's a rite of passage requiring a general aptitude test. Depends a lot on the locale. In the big cities for instance, yes, you need an official trainer's license, education, legal agency, competency, etc. in order to purchase balls or receive free medical treatment (that's typically the bar of enforcement). However, once you have 'mons round your belt or beside you, checking for ID is basically a non-issue unless you give the clerk reason to be suspicious. Could get you in hot water if your license lapsed. Penalty charges are killer. A portion of your license fee goes to shelter organizations and provides some funding for the local Pokémon Center, both of which qualify as charities. Obviously, criminals/the Pokémob don't abide by these rules. Because of this, there exists a substantial black market for trainer supplies that cannot be traced.

Arguably most people living outside the major cities aren't officially licensed. Licensing and registration becomes more important if you're doing research, carrying a 'dex, entering official tournaments, taking gym challenges, or going on a mission on behalf of the League. For the common folk doing day-to-day activities, it's really up to whether you and your mon get along. The police aren't gonna bust down your Lake Acuity house door because you've been keeping an unregistered Swirlix in your pantry.

Out on the frontier, you have less regulation to worry about, though technologies like balls and Pokémon Center healing are scarce to begin with. This has an interesting effect. Less time in the ball means more time to bond, yet not without unique challenges for human and mon alike. Currently working on a project that highlights these differences, the importance of the ball or lack thereof, and relations to societal norms so thought I'd share. A good and thought-provoking line of questions for worldbuilding, anon.

Basically, I've had this idea of making a custom-built hack for Leaf Green. The only changes are:
>The starters are changed
>Trainer teams are modified to be more difficult
>Pokemon from Gen 2 and 3 are encountered in the wild (this idea is being debated in my mind)
>The Rival character is completely removed, Oak's dialogue is a little different as a result
Then, me and my friend are going to play through the game together, saying we're rivals, our starter being our favorite pokemon. We fight each other at certain points as usual, but it's mostly a mad dash for the Championship, and also filling up the Pokedex too if we're up to it. There'll be a champion fight with us against each other, of course.
After we're done, we'll either write the story together throughout the way or wait until after we finish playing. I'm not sure how well this would work, or if this is considered "fanfiction material", but whatever.

What's the consensus for having your OC interact with game characters outside of battle? Not outright inserting your donut steel into the everyday lives of canon characters, but, say, your OC seeking the counsel of a gym leader outside of battle, or asking a high-profile trainer with powerful connections for help. I know Pedestal did this but I really shouldn't be taking any cues from that fic.

I don't see any problem with it; on the contrary, it adds a degree of liveliness to the story in the very least. It's not like people IRL don't interact with each other about their realms of expertise.

Besides the way I see it things like asking for advice or getting consulting, depending on the kind of character chosen, serve as a very good hook for character development. Like, say, from a Gym Leader: they are in theory well known and busy figures, so your character knows that if they got a day of attention from them they better make good use of it.

Take your cues from the stories where their advice and method is shown to work. Popularity and memeability are not really stable indicators for the future adequacy of things like narrative advice or the usability of things in a writer's toolkit, nor anything else meta really.

Over the past year I spent most of my time editing and touching up TDT and VoD. This ended with me only writing a small handful of new chapters this year, which isn't unheard of by my standards as much as I'd like it not to be.

I was more active, and supposedly productive, but not much new content got put out.

Over the next year, I have a fairly lofty goal to finish TDT. It's much farther along in its planning than it ever has been, and even has its climax and epilogue written out. There's about 28k words of content that isn't released yet, and I have plenty of plans for more.

VoD may or may not get put to the side so I can focus on finishing TDT, but we'll see about that when it happens.

Closer in view, I have a goal of late January for the next chapter of TDT, but leave that as a tentative date.

A few threads ago, but knifecats have been showing up frequently in the writethread for a long time. They're featured prominently in a handful of our author's stories and are often used in bumps. Really it's been the de facto mascot for awhile, we're just acknowledging it.

The very thread they became mascot, we were all just posting pictures of them while discussing things mildly related and others took notice. What I feel is that naming a character that writes "Writer" (transliterated into Katakana regardless) is rather uninspired, and going in two directions (imported English "writer" for one, actual Asiatic word for the other) at once blurs the theme. Also, such a theme prevents them from having an identity because their names define them, rather than them defining themselves and being merely identified by their names. Stepping just a little farther away, as I mentioned, allows the backstory of the names to remain while insulating them from their names' inspirations.

That's not a judgment of you as a person; it's a warning that while you might be all kinds of excited about advancing some Japanese-themed syllables, it's bringing in some baggage. Thus, there must be a subjective positive that outweighs the negative of that baggage.

I just have to say this: nothing honestly riles me up more than being called a weeb. I meet too many in my daily life already- to be associated with them, to me, is an insult. I just like Japanese culture, language, and their history and for that, I get lumped in time to time with that kind of "culture".
The Daiymo periods are incredibly interesting, reading all about their wars, tactics, and mythology around it. Then there's Shintoism, stories surrounding the yokai and kami, and poetry.

Also, knee-jerk reaction, yes, I'm sorry. Thing is, you just plainly stated that with little explanation. I mean, now you gave one so it makes sense. I meant nothing against you personally in the end. Just my own spiteful anger getting ahead of it all- not my victim complex which doesn't really exist. If it did, I wouldn't be here on 4chan.

Being a runaway means hiding from the system to some extent. You're not hiding if you're swiping your trainer ID at pokecenters. Furthermore, a pokemon world naturally has a lot more casual penetration of "normal people" into remote areas because exploring the wilds will be a common, rather than naturalist niche, pastime.

The way to "run away" is to be anything but a trainer. One would likely keep pokemon for protection but you'd want to stay off the routes and to hide in plain sight just like runaways do in our world: Get by quietly and keep moving.

My thoughts are pretty much in line with what cge said. The life of a trainer isn't stealthy in the slightest. It requires you to interact with other people a whole lot, as you visit routes, towns, and gyms in search of battles and adventure. Think about how many NPCs you interact with and battle in an average Pokemon game. Think about how many times you use Pokemon Centers, and how every time you do, you walk right up to the nurse and let her get a good long look at you as you hand over your Pokemon to be healed. I think runaways would be identified and tracked down pretty quickly if they tried to become trainers, making it an unviable escape route if you ask me.

Nothing stopping them but your imagination. If you characterize your villains a particular way they may have reasons to hold back or not fight tooth and nail. Then it's your responsibility to develop a rationale for their behavior. Plenty of tropes to choose from: past trauma, sympathy for the hero, faulty convictions, or, as you said, a sliver of honor or simply underestimating their opponent.

As for who breaks the rules, think your classic bond villain. Anyone who stands to lose everything if they don't get their way. It's not an exhaustive list however. You can create motives where you need them.

On a more meta level, consider how your readers will react to a final showdown where conventional rules are followed. YMMV depending on what it is you're writing. To make for a more interesting conclusion, it might be of some benefit to your work by having an intense final stand which departs from conventional rules. Trust your literary instincts.

The local police forces and if need be, the military. In cases where the police is inept, corrupt or otherwise indisposed, then there isn't much to stop them outside of anyone that wishes to stand up to them. Which is where the protagonist(s) or any individual that is not interested in taking their shit come in. Eventually. Often through [form of attack] by [Pokemon] or [caliber of bullet] delivered by [type of firearm].

In ACPC, the King and his Court are not hindered in any meaningful capacity by the police department in Lumiose, which is corrupt to some extent and is actively seeking to preserve the flow of income into the city (and therefore the department) via tourism and extortion of brothels. Therefore, the King eventually answers to the protagonists, and in decidedly extra-legal fashion. Though the police do eventually get involved, though in a more removed, but still important fashion.

Yes. It's just going to be a bit more striking when it is recognized as such.

Maybe the better question is why did you raise the carried limit to friggin' 18. No one is going to be taking the time to take care and give interaction and relaxation time to that many Pokémon at once, and you'd need some Macross-tier infrastructure to handle offices, arenas and locations that can handle multiple trainers with that many Pokémon at a time.

Doing the equivalent to Nomura's belts and zippers out of fashion statement, but as all fashion statements, they are done because of the fashion and not because of providing any sort of utility (in fact, most of them are done precisely because they reduce utility).

Also much depends on what does set the limit of number of moves for a Pokémon in your setting, but that's the kind of thing treatised for in a lot of places already, and I'm not sure what to contrinute about it at 3 AM.

Well, for one, you have to wonder about what kind of writer would come to ask for advice on 4chan of all things. it's like, well, it's not like other sites where writers gather and offer advie are behind paywalls, so those new writers have to be a special kind of desperate to land here.

Serebii had a thread specifically about criticism being too harsh or too soft shortly ago. One point that caught my attention is that most people who criticize wrong do it because they step too far ahead into the process: they want the other writer to write better (or "perfect" or "exactly like I want") but for that to function they also need show they want the writer to write - they need their criticism to be inviting and matched to the requester's level and branch of skills.

Or are mature enough to handle it. From all my experiences in writethreads on several boards against the fanfic community in general, I usually find 4chan writers are actually more competent, willing to explore mature topics, and willing to improve. I cannot say whether this is a cause or effect of a more caustic environment; whether the trash is put out early, leaving only the skilled behind, or if the reputation keeps all but the most hardy and adaptable away, but it is my experience. 4chan writers are a special breed that, with their own very small footprint and influence, better the fanfiction community as a whole and raise it to a higher standard

I think the great problem is that people often don't write a story before asking for critique on it. We get first chapters, or half first chapters, or "I have an idea" and they want critique on a world-building idea dump that hasn't actually gone anywhere yet.

At this point, I don't think anything less than a completed short story should be considered for critique. Less than that, and the writer hasn't invested enough into the work and learned enough from the experience of creating it to be unwilling to trash it and to recognize in the critique how to relate its commentary to the process that the author just endured.

But this is another wheat-from-chaff separation after (>>34695746) since it requires the courage to write a story to completion, get it lasered, and then rewrite it to improved completion.

Being a writer, editor or critic are all differents skills.
Giving critique shouldn't be about tearing someone down, but building someone up. This is fanfiction not high literature - at least that's what you crabs want to make of it.
Every story has its merits and deserves to be told. Yes, sometimes the only criticism you can give is something as broad as "work on your spelling" but everyone has to start somewhere - this goes for both the writer and the critic.

This shouldn't be used as an excuse to not work on the shared skills applicable to both. There is no reason to arbitrarily lower standards for subject. High literature it is not, but the mechanics of writing don't care what it is you're writing, just that you are. And that process can (and should!) be refined through critique. You don't hold fanart to a lower standard just because it's fanart, and you don't judge less the production value of a remix over an original piece of music. Writing is not an exception, here.

The level of critique isn't unduly onerous; we still have a stable of active writers in the thread. They generally make high quality work. But that work takes time, hence the dead periods occasionally. I for one am not willing to sacrifice quality for quantity in this thread.

Sometimes you need to tear someone down to build them up. Often, people are built up WRONG. They come in with a head full of bad habits (e.g. script form, or present tense). or a massive ego (e.g. Latinanon), and it prevents them from seeing a need for improvement, or that there's room for it at all. Those people are already built up,and still making substandard work. A reviewer must then tear down what is there, to clear the lot. Only then can they be built up BETTER.

In my case at least, I never thought about writing fanfic until participating in writethreads. I still don't advertise my stories anywhere else. Criticism in here does often touch on themes and minor details that stand out, as well as addressing characterization and story direction as a whole. It goes far beyond the mere proofreading you seem to believe. Are you new here? Can't be, you wouldn't be invested enough to get this mad. One needs be mindful that the idolization of "higher, faster, better, stronger" does not get in the way of acknowledging that there is more than one way to make things work; most people are not ALLCAPS WRONG (according to who's standards?) to the point that have to be put down to be "rebuilt" (in who's image?) - even you mention present tense, for example, in a context where it'd be a sin against nature or something. In the sense of why people would even think of asking for critique, what I have seen is that both newbies and seasoned writers tend to not think first of how broad the "simple" activity of sitting down and writing is. When one goes into gardening hobby, buying the correct pesticide, fixing the trimming and doing some watering usually gets all "assumed" - until the dreadful moment where someone points out to you that, well, why are you not taking care of X.

People tend to not be well prepared for that kind of realization, and that extra weight to the problem of a writer who wants to write, just hasn't thought of it like a war, becoming disheartened and losing a potential hobby.

I can understand that. Editing is important, but it can be a challenge. Hearing critique is one thing; accepting and internalizing that critique, building up the motivation to dive back into your story and make changes, and ensuring your "edits" aren't just making things worse, is another.
But maybe that's not true for everyone. If nothing else, it's accurate to my experience with editing. Case in point, trying to edit that Purrloin story of mine based on your and Choroy's feedback has been slow going, even though said feedback was helpful.

That sounds like it could be true. It's how I got here, at least, if I remember correctly. I never heard about vpwt before coming to 4chan, but after stumbling across the thread and lurking a bit, I decided to join in and see if I could learn how to improve my writing. I'd tried my hand at writing fanfiction and normal fiction before, but I always kept it to myself, and I wasn't actively looking for a place to discuss writing or post my work, so joining this place was sort of spontaneous. I don't regret it, though.

This is a concern I've never before heard expressed (at least so directly). Since I often bend over backwards to provide example (by rewriting passages) when applicable (not when it's just a grammar/punct fix), I don't expect to leave the correct paths without illumination.

That said I have seen times when the second version was a sibling of the first and I momentarily wonder how everything around the problems changed but the problems as indicated did not change. Assuming it is a form of attachment, and that further efforts may be in vain, I take the hint at that point; I'll remark finally upon it, but I'll be reluctant to invest much more into that particular case.
