Anyone else surprised that GF hasn't really shilled any of the Gen 7 starters? Is the first time in Pokemon history where a a starter wasn't shoved down peoples throats?

It only seems lackluster in comparison to last Generation's frogtism. Incineroar has gotten just as much of a push as you can say for any of them in Gens 2, 4 and 5.

Rowlet is very popular, and is heavily promoted right up there with Pikachu and Alolan Vulpix.

Rowlet is the "cute" starter, Litten's line are the "cool"/"tough" ones.

Rowlet and the Litten line get plenty of attention. The Popplio line, not so much.

The final stages got exactly the same amount of merch, though. Rowlet only gets more merch because it belongs to the Ash and not a secondary character.

True, but Piplup was at least owned by the main girl. Popplio doesn't even have that luxury. It's in the same position Mudkip was in with Brock during AG.

We have Ash, Lillie, and four secondary characters, and Popplio belongs to neither of the two main characters.

Primarina has been surpassing both of the other starters as well as other Alola Pokemon (such as Bewear in pic related) in the few occasions it had the chance to, so my hope is that Lana's Popplio actually evolves and gets to be more useful than Piplup ever was. Lana itself is still really popular despite being a secondary character.

Incineroar somewhat, as it was heavily featured in M20 (where it beats Charmeleon, and Charmeleon beats it).

Just curious what you think Gen 3's shill was. It seemed like a tie between Sceptile and Blaziken, what with Blaziken literally cockblocking Ash in Johto despite Gen 3's games not even being released.

This, Rowlet's the specific star starter in terms of merch, but the entire Litten line's gotten plenty. Litten itself is in much merch, Torracat's poised to be in the anime if future merch is any indication, Incineroar got the movie and corresponding merch.

Primarina's the wildcard 'cause it's true it sells merch but this is in Japan, and I have to wonder due to its all-female status in canon and ton of humanoid accessories if it's THAT appealing to a worldwide audience. Which I ask in genuine curiosity and not in a mean-spirited way.

Primarina's plush has been out of stock for about 3 weeks in the US PokéCenter and it has more reviews than most other recent releases. It's doing more than fine in the west too.

That's admittedly why I said Japan, since their tastes can be markedly different to and for the cutesy. And I hesitate to bring it up in what's been a genuinely friendly thread, but Primarina appeals pretty specifically to the weeb and waifu side of things a lot elsewhere in the world, whom can be pretty intense on what they like.

Out of stock in the sense that it was a limited release alongside the other Alola starters final stages, but to this day it's the only one of the three that sold out, and it did before Christmas.

Out of the second stages, Torracat sold out but Brionne and Dartrix didn't.

Reviews are also a good indication of how much a product sells, since only certified buyers can leave them, and having more generally means the product has been selling better.
