Is it worth buying black/white and black/white 2?

I thought they were sequals and the more I read, the more I see it's more of an Emerald to Ruby/Saphire

BW2's story is really bad though (even for pokémon standars) but they have more content. BW have better story but lacks postgame.

I think about this a lot.... BW's plot is way better, but its gyms and gameplay are a lot worse (far more linear, less bonus areas to explore, way less postgame). BW2 is graphically better (sprites aren't as blobby and you get cool little details like lights reflecting off the water) making it more atmospheric, and it has perfect features like the thing that tells you how many Pokemon are left to catch in an area. Yet BW2 story makes me cringe every playthrough, and the final climax of it is a gruel to get through.

I prefer to see both gen 5 games as two pieces of a greater whole. Like sonic 3 and knuckles and zelda oracles of seasons/ages. No other main pokemon games give that feel for me as weird as that sounds.

I do too, still, sucks when I'm playing BW doing Eliza's gym knowing how much better it could be, and equally sucks reaching the end of BW2 not being pumped for slogging through stupid flying pirate ship followed by generic bland cave for the final showdown

I liked dennis's murder attempt of the MC, N's appearance, and Dennis having a mental breakdown. Not BW1 finale levels but still satisfying.

The main issue is pokemon variety, unovabortions say it feels fresh bc you have brand new pokemon to choose, yet during the maingame many pokemon are unavailable, and some evolve so late you will likely end the maingame with mid evos of them.
Routes start to feel repetitive after route 4, having just evolved pokemon from former routes, which means you are obliged to pick many shitmons or wait for the lategame and grind like hell for good pokemon.

Also many good TMs are postgame, like shadowball, earthquake or Flamethrower, so it's better to rely on your team's lvl up moveset.

Plot wise it's great and stuff, but gameplay wise you will get frustated easily.

Big thing I noticed is the game locks you into the same general cycle of shitmon until about the time you get Surf, meaning not only do you encounter the same bland mons repeatedly, opposing trainers only use those mons, which gets old fast

After you get Surf/reach Chargestone Cave it's fine, but before that it's tedious

i am in chargestone cave actually, i got my shouldermon Tynamo there, but when i was planning my team i had to reject many pokemon for that. It gets better after Twist Mountain actually, route 7 is route 2 + route 5.
Imagine my shock when i realized Chandelure needs a dusk stone and it can only be found in route 10, or vanilluxe, a good mixed attacker with decent speed and defenses, evolves at lvl 47.
If you want a smooth playthrough there are some good early game picks like krookorok, Sigilyph, Scolipede, Stoutland or Sawk/Thro.

Yeah the Desert Route gives you a bunch of stuff to its credit, Maractus, Darmanitan, and Scrafty are all completely viable too. The high levels suck and the movepools are definitely not encouraging. I like Chargestone cuz after a drought you get sudden access to Ferrothorn, Galvantula, etc, but yeah fair point about Route 7, I remember it fondly just cuz it's when trainers finally start using good evolutions of pokemon
