The biggest thing that makes fakemon stick out is the lack of good silhouette. There's like seven or eight "standard" fakemon bodies that just get colors/accents placed on them and it makes them all look the same.
Second biggest is that real pokemon generally have each part of the design doing double duty i.e. conveying type, telling the story of what the pokemon is/why it exists, or relating it to an already existing animal. Lots of fakemon just have things thrown in because they look decent but it just muddies the water
This is all easier said than done of course

A mushroom that grows like a witch/wizard, and other parts of it's body that look like ghouls/demons. Perfect theme, great conveying of the typing, and cool, above all else. Every part of the design adds to the overall pokemon.
