How should mainline Pokémon be made harder? I hear about how the games are too easy, but how should they be made more difficult?

i'd say difficulty modes (easy having more handholding, free items, dumber AI, etc. while hard having less handholding and items, better AI and teams on opponents) but somebody's going to argue that nobody will pick easy mode because muh peer pressure.

unless it's danmaku like touhou then you will die even on easy mode

AI that doesn't keep using a move that does absolutely nothing, will switch out or have coverage against pokemon with super-effective STABs, full teams and pokemon actually having all four moves, held items being more common.

Don't be a pussy and use exp share, turn battle mode to set and don't use lucky egg

Increase level curve, buff gym leaders and make evolutionary items appear a little later

Reward exploration more by having rare loot found by fighting / HMing

If all else fails, give a toggleable option at the start: Permadeath Mode

If you were playing blind this could actually lead to some defeats, forcing you to rethink your strategy, especially if they use some clever or unexpected tactics similar to Totems

Honestly? Maybe something like this. Level caps make the battle tower clones actually challenging because you can't cheese with high stats.

A harder game should mean the player has to dig into the depth of the battle sytem. Use tactics and not brute force to win. but muh children and muh phones so Game freak will never do this. and we're left with shit ROM hacks that just raise levels to compensate for shit AI and turn the game into a grind. Not hard. Not fun either.

Double Battles. Of course, not every battle will be a Double, but having the player switch between the two formats while taking even a little care into how the NPCs fight to fit their respective ones will force the player to be prepared for both playstyles and reduce the chance of cheesing every battle with one specific loudout kitted to either format. In addition, when you're in a Double Battle against a computer you have twice the choices per turn to win with whereas the NPC, being AI, cannot handle the same synergies dynamically. This means you can give the NPC a harder overall setup while still allowing the player an upper hand to fall back on.

It's fucking pokemon. If the game is too easy then just under-level your pokemon, if the game is too hard over-level them. This has been standard practice in every fucking RPG that has levels and wild battles.

Why exactly would that be better?

I can quickly think of one reason why that's worse. The higher you level the higher the enemy levels, the more EXP you gain from each fight, until it snowballs into you reaching Lv100 by the time you're halfway into the story. Unless you also change how EXP works.

How fucking stupid can you be? There is no grinding in pokemon since the exp. share became a key item. The only way to get a challenge out of the game is to turn exp share off and avoid grinding.

grinding doesn't equal challenge.

The exp-share could be tuned down a notch, but I personally enjoy not being ~10 levels below the next gym leader unless I kill wild pokemon for 10 hours.
