Artificial rarity by forcing you to wait until you find a Ditto to breed for it or spend awhile hunting/soft resetting for a female.
Same as Eevee, same as Riolu, same as the Starters, same as virtually every other rare Pokemon with a 87.5% Male Ratio in existence.

They're references to the three wise monkeys (all of which are male) that represent the see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil, proverb.

They're supposed to be supplementary starters; same type, access to starter only abilities etc so gender ratio being the same is not too surprising.

It's part of their other main theme, stereotypes. They're all based off of a stereotype in Japanese culture. I can't remember the exact connection between them, but I do know that; Simisear's stereotype is bike gangs; Simisage's stereotype is delinquents; Simipour's stereotype is gossip girls.

Both designs reference it; it's extremely prevalent in eastern mythos. Zen mode Darmanitan is definitely a reference to it but the monkey trio go further with it.

Look at the base designs for the trio.

Not seen this before but I agree with one of the earlier posts. They just didn't go far enough with the theme and the monkeys were bland and forgettable as a result. Too basic.

desu as someone who actually likes the monkeys, it's the opposite problem. Unno tried to do so much at once and implement too many different themes into the design which made none of them stand out as a result and he forgot to focus on their general appeal. It's part of the reason I like them, the sheer scope of just how much he managed to fit in to such small packages, but it really doesn't work. They're a rare case of actual overdesign in Pokemon.

I don't mind the first stages but I'm not as keen on the evolutions. They're just a bit basic looking to me and I really don't like overly similar trios.

The lake trio are way too similar for my tastes and these remind me of them. They're like the same base Pokémon wearing different costumes.

And don't get me started on the pallette swap genies.

That's part of why they might look like the same Pokémon in costumes to me. Like you said trying to design 6 monkeys, who are similar enough to one another to be a trio, whilst also representing their type and theme ( which changes upon evolution) in their designs is no tall order.

I think I get what you mean though. Too ambitious so in the end result nothing stands out.

Exactly how I'd describe Unno. Between the direction of BW2 and nearly all of his designs being overloaded with different ideals (Rufflet line being the exception), he's always trying to do a bit too much for his work. At least it worked out for Garchomp, though.

There's still plenty of Unova I like but I do agree there are some that could benefit from being toned back a bit.

It's cliche but you really have to hand it to Unovas bug types; some of the very best designs there imo. I always liked whimisicott line, mincinno line, male frillish line, krookodile line (prior to 3D models), but when the games were announced I hated almost every legendary design. Over the years Zekrom has grown on me but I still can't stand most of them.

Unno didn't have a say on the rest of Unova's Pokemon, I was referring to stuff like Pokestar Studios. Another starry-eyed project with some depth but just fell flat and niche because of doing too much without the basic appeal. A lot of people here say they want Unno to return as a director for the games because of how much content is in BW2, but he isn't grounded enough and GameFreak have been shown to be a bit too forgiving so there's nobody balance him out.
