I think it's because of the stark contrast between the two in terms of theme.
In the first season, everyone was trying to survive and find themselves amidst horrible danger, comforted only by eachother and their digital partners.
In the second season, everyone seems to be doing OK except the digimon, so there's not really much driving the plot aside from the characters themselves. It doesn't focus around the main cast from the last season. and this cast, aside from Davis (and ken), don't really have any useful skills or aspects of their personality that allow them to be anything more than just another character. Digieggs feel gimmicky rather than powerful and necessary. Ken is an annoying gary stu as a villain. there were a lot of concepts thrown in that weren't in the original like spores or spires or the dimension where they fought the final villain.
It did get a lot of things right, but only after things had gone so wrong to the point where they had to go right to still be called digimon. Making the digiworld transmissible feels like it tampered with the previous season, but it was necessary. exploring the digiworld was great when they did. Bringing back the old cast was awesome to say the least, and their interactions with everyone and thing felt so right. Imperialdramon was cool, as well as sylphymon and blackwargreymon. every digimon really felt really fleshed out.
The ending was a kick in the nuts, but it felt right to end after seeing the world saved twice by mostly the same group.

I just wished there was more asskicking action and desperate struggles like the first. The new main characters really didn't shine like the old ones. 02 is good in it's own right, but it suffers from being a sequel, that's not really a direct sequel but follows loosely and goes a different (but equally understandable) way from the first.

Not really, Re-Digitize did well, Cyber Sleuth & Next Order did alright while Hacker's Memory crashed, I suppose due to it being sold as an expansion for Cyber Sleuth + Yo-Kai Watch, most likely the next game will do better, given that Hacker's Memory was made to hold over digis until then.

Adding to my comment, The shift from kid-oriented to teenage-oriented wasn't supposed to be a huge event, and by SMT I mean like the shift Devil Summoner had, or SMTIV, at best you had Persona which eventually branched off by the 3rd game and even then mainline and other SMT titles are still being made.
