It takes nowhere near that long, I've played through it close to a dozen times.

It gets hate because it's pretty close to a worse version of BW2. Doesn't make it bad at all, just no real reason to play it.

The highest number of new pokemon introduced, even moreso than gen 1. No annoying Zubat in caves or Magikarp in the oceans.

DS Graphics being pushed to new heights, resulting in extremely beautiful and memorable scenery. Excellent animations for its time.

Introduced sprites that never stopped moving, infinite TM usage, and paved the road for a competitive scene.

Gym Leaders actually played a role in the society they live in, the games also provided backstory for most of them.

Well-written story, which provided a real sense of urgency once the story hit its peak.

Arguably the best soundtrack.

I would argue BW1 be the only perfect games that Game Freak has put out.

BW metagame was literally the worst pokemon metagame since gen 2. Weather wars dominated the metagame and you HAD to run counter weather.

Competitive Pokemon was also alive and well way beyond Gen 5.

The rest is subjective stuff that all applies to BW2, the real best games of the franchise.

Unlimited TM use is one of the best changes that the series has ever made.

Not nearly to the extent of Gen V. I don't see how it's even debatable that B/W made the best use of gym leaders as characters.

It took me a while to get used to B/W because there were literally no older Pokémon until the postgame and all the new ones looked vastly different than the signature “Pokémon” design. I guess it payed off though, since when B2W2 rolled around the older Pokémon felt new again. Still though, the Unova dex is definately the black sheep of the franchise. Even now when I see most Unova Pokémon my first thought is that it’s a Digimon.

To be honest, I just don't get this opinion at all. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I just don't see it. The Unova Pokemon don't seem to me to be any different from any prior generation. Some of them are a little overdone (particularly some of the legendaries), but that's nothing new. By and large, I really don't think there's any difference in either design philosophy or quality as compared to the rest of the series.

I've been playing the series since Gen I, and a disproportionate number of my favorite designs are from Unova.

Only 2 of them where mandatory (both with an outside area with different/no encounters) the rest where short/post game or didn't had woobat at all.

There's only 1 water route in BW1 unova, Basculin isn't there.

Really the most annoying thing in unova is the Patrat/Pidove family with detect.
