This is probably the most unique swimsuit they've done for a main girl in the series. I like the way you can tell her top hangs a few inches off her chest, meaning her boobs push it out more.

If you were lying right underneath her you'd probably see all that underboob.

Come to think of it I think this is the only time they actually show May tie her bandana on her head. I've rewatched AG many times but I can't think of a single episode they showed her actually tie the knots of her bandana on her head. I don't think it was ever shown even when she had it off.

Looking through these early AG episodes, May really did get a lot to do even before her Contest arc even started. I liked how they kept her in focus in the regular episodes or fillers, then when she got Wurmple her arc started to advance.

Since this is from the same episode, it's weird to see her boobs bigger in the first shot than the second one. I swear the animators magically changed May's boob size even in the same episode. It's like they had no style guides to work with and did whatever they want.

Well most of the ones where May's boobs are at their biggest of course. Although as I've been saying, all the images with May's arms lifted in the air...her chest always sticks out. The swimsuit ones are of course obvious favorites.

Also as May gets into battling almost all her pokeball throwing shots either put emphasis on her breasts as she twirls around or gives close-ups on her chest.

May is (imo) the default female protag, sorta like Red. Gen 2's pokegirls are messy as hell. Dawns alright but she's pretty basic. Some of the ones that came after Gen 4 are really good but theyre not classic.

May encompasses that sweet spot between gen 1/2's 10 year old in baggy 90s clothes and the fashionable modern city kid look from gen 5 up.

For me I think it's that May's design is the perfect balance between tomboy and girly. She doesn't look as overly girly as later females from the games/anime, but she's not overly tomboyish either.

This is the main thing for me, at least regarding her personality. As far as the design, the coloring of her clothes and hair is good and meshes together well while also not being flashy. She's also both cute and has curves unlike most (all?) of the other companions who are flat.

It's a weird thing for me. I liked Advanceshipping when Hoenn was originally airing, but after everything they did with Drew and her I just accepted it. And then later on shipped Ash with Dawn and Serena so it didn't bother me much. If the writers are bothering to put in a plotline there I couldn't ignore it, especially since so much of her Contest arc is based on it.

I still really like how clingy/close May feels to Ash in the early Hoenn era, although sadly this stops as the season progresses.

Advanceshippers are a dying breed. As much as I really like Amour, I often go back to Advance.
I do think it died out for several reasons, but Amour was definitely one that progressed it further. It just fills a really similar niche to Advance, but Serena actually has canonical feelings.

If you're also wondering though, Advance does have some pretty slick moments, but they're "subtle" I guess. I like how Ash comes in immediately after that screencap you posted to give her Ice Cream. I thought it was a nice gesture, almost trying to take her attention away from Drew haha.

You could just look up Iwane's animated episodes, his eps look the best for all seasons. He animated some of the best battles in DP and XY too.

Iwane worked on Dragonball Z in the 90's, a lot of eps in the Boo saga were done by him. He then worked on Pokemon since the original series to this very day. He drew May the prettiest and with the fullest figure.

Every time a new big Ash ship comes the previous ones die down or lose a bit of popularity. The same thing happened to Pearlshipping when Serena/Amour was introduced. Ash/Dawn used to be very popular especially in Japan but then a lot of them moved onto Ash/Serena so Pearl lost a lot of its popularity.

It's to be expected, especially when you realize some of these sagas are now decades old and younger fans probably never watched them. AG aired from 2002-2006, literally 12-15 years ago, so it's to be expected a lot of younger fans aren't interested and older fans like ourselves either moved on or don't have much to say anymore. Especially when you figure most are now 25-30 year old adults.

This thread is really making me remember why I was so attracted to May as a kid/teen and still am today.

AG itself may not be the best series (although I have a nostalgic attachment to it), although May herself makes a lot of the eps worth watching.
