I've seen many different opinions on what the "core" to the series is, ranging from specific things like the turn-based battle system to vague things like "capturing pokemon on an adventure".

What do you think the core to the franchise is? Things that if they changed, it wouldn't be "Pokemon" anymore. I know it's impossible but try to be more objective than subjective.
