I thought it was meant that Lusamine was the only adult who believed in Guzma back when he was trying to become a captain. Nowadays even adults are scared of Skull Boss Guzma.

Guzma "could never become a captain" and captains retire at 20. So if he can't become a captain anymore, he's over 20.

If Guzma was under 20 he would say it more like "they won't let me become a captain, these traditions suck" etc.

Also his mom is old as fuck.

It is never stated they did it at the same time, just that they both failed to become captains. Considering Kukui is married to Burnet who must be on her late 20s or early 30s Guzma is probably younger and did his trials earlier, but it's old enough to not qualify as captain.

Acerola is an orphan, you are thinking of Happu. Happu's grandad was a Kahuna, not a captain.

Unless you are thinking of Nanu who Acerola affectively calls "uncle", he's a Kahuna not a captain either.

But the game dialogue even says Kukui and Guzma know each other since they were under 20 and didn't become captains around the same time (but evidently took different paths).
People in Alola are captains until 20, then they move on from that and go on with their lives, so at the very least, Guzma is also an adult and likely as old as Kukui

You have to consider this when trying to age Guzma:

He's gotta be in his mid-20s at the bare minimum. Personally, I think he's in his early 30s, but I can see why someone would disagree with that. He's definitely not a teen or some shit.

Are you sure of this? It's been in-game 20 years since Gen I/III according to Porygon's poke dex entry.

There are two years between GenI/III and Gen II/IV, and unknown time (aproximately 10 judging by the ex-Rocket family) between IV and V, two years between BW and BW2, and XY were said by Matsumiyan to happen near the same time as BW2 (but this last detail may be not canon as he deleted that tweet, but people in-game does talk of the mess Plasma did in Unova).

It's 3 years between Gen I/III and Gen II/IV, not 2. The unknown time between Gen IV and Gen V could be anywhere from 5 years to 10. Also, iirc, Porygon was invented sometime before the events of Gen I, though we don't know how long ago it was before then. We know SM takes place 2 years after BW2 due to this reference sheet.
