First 2 gens obviously play by the male character except for Crystal; Ruby for boys and Sapphire for girls, Emerald and Platinum are arbitrary.
For me, I use the male character for the original games and the female for remakes.
And by the autistic way, Kanto and Johto are for boys, Hoenn and Sinnoh for girls, Unova 1 for boys, Unova 2 for girls, Kalos for girls and Alola for boys.
