So I'm going to start the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series but I have no idea about version changes or if there's huge differences in versions or trading is required or what versions to go for.

Do I buy them if I can find them? Is there some kind of DS integration that makes emulating hit a dead end during the story and or which version of the first set do I get because they're on different systems entirely I'm really not sure what to do.

You mean things like blowing into the microphone? There's none of that for the DS games IIRC. And using the touch screen is always optional

That never happens during the game.

The only thing you might have a problem with is quick saving in Rescue Team, which if you don't set up properly, won't let you keep your save file, but if I remember correctly that's only a problem in Red Rescue Team, the inferior version, so I don't think you should be concerned.

Play Blue Rescue Team first. You may be put off by some things, such us all of the menus being really bad to control and some mechanics.
Those minor issues got solved in the second game, Explorers of Sky, which is the next one you should play.

After that, decide what to play next based on your autism:

Japanese only Wiiware game that nobody cares about. It's basically Explorers of Sky, except with a new mechanic, Arceus, bad graphics, bad music and a simple and irrelevant story.

An incomplete game. That's it. This game was never completed. The dungeons are a lot more repetitive than the other games, there's less than 150 Pokémon to recruit and it has a lacking postgame.
It introduced some new interesting mechanics that make you wish were in at least one of the other games.
They tried to make the entire thing even easier than the other games, mostly by removing the belly in most dungeons. Interestingly enough, in some of the late story dungeons they actually went around this by making weather conditions actually matter. Kind of.
The graphics are divisive for the fans because they are completely different from the DS games, and some people just don't like that.
A lot of people seem to hate the story, but most of them never gave it a fair chance. While it doesn't hype itself up as much as Explorers and feels a little bit lacking at some points, it's the most solid one in the series and actually has some likable characters for once.
Good luck enjoying it with how slow the text is though.

It's like GtI, except it's a full game and decided not to keep most of the gameplay elements or mechanics introduced or changed in that game, while also fixing all of its flaws. It tried to be harder than the previous games (don't expect too much though). It's a very solid game.
On the other hand, they made some changes that fans of the previous games didn't like, such as replacing the old recruiting system with a much more limited one. Also, there's this weird thing that prevents you from using the same Pokémon too often and should have stopped existing once you get to the postgame.
The story is divisive. A lot of people hates the second part of the story because it spends all of its time trying to surprise you with plot twist that don't necessarily make sense, hyping everything up or just making references to the past games. The first part of the story seems to be also hated by a lot of people, but usually not the same people who hate the second. It's just a simple slice of life thing with the characters going to school and trying to have fun by exploring the surrounding area.

I mostly agree with >>34630072 >>34630098 >>34630102. The only thing I would add is that the games treat you like a toddler with the attention span of a peanut at times and provide stupid unskippable flashbacks to things you did literally 5 minutes ago, but try to not let that detract from the actual plot which is leagues more heartfelt than anything you would experience in the main series.
I liked the plot of Super but it's because I love ridiculous anime plots also because the idyllic atmosphere of the very beginning made me kinda depressed.

Play Blue first, it's the original and is a solid experience. Then play Sky, it's the "third" version of the Explorers trio and offers the most content. It's considered by most players to be the best of the games. In my opinion, this is because it's best all around even if some of the other games excel in certain areas. Gates should only be played if you're a die hard fan. It has a good story (some say the best since the characters actually have character) but the gameplay is very slow and easy. The interesting things they did add are unfortunately not really encountered till the end. It does bring a ton of QoL improvements but Super retains them as well. Super is a good game, some say on par with Sky. The gameplay is at it's best in Super and it is pretty hard if you don't know when to use items (frequently). Story is a bit of a mess though, with a very slow first half and too fast second.

Red/Time/Darkness are pointless to play, as Blue/Sky exist. There are some "exclusives" in red/Blue, but you can just input a wonder mail code with a mission involving said exclusive mon and they'll appear for good.

I replayed Explorers recently, and almost every time this happened there was a save point in between. It's less they think you're stupid and more in case you put the game down and don't remember what just happened whenever you pick it back up.

Play the first PMD, then explorer's of sky, then you can play PSMD if you want but it's not required. Skip Pokemon GTI altogether it's complete shit and needs to be retconned.

only to the point where you can be any of the starter Pokemon and not restricted. I probably could've worded it better. legit just re-release the game where you all starters are available. and I'd probably play it. That's the only thing that stopped me from play it. Granted, I'd probably pick Pikachu and be a totally faggot and ship MC with Partner Fem Snivy anyway but it's the point that it shouldn't have been restricted to begin with.

Also, Rescue Team is less polished than Explorers. For example, recruiting system is less forgiving, and a lot of Pokemon can be recruited only in Lv. 1 dungeons for no reason. Some Pokemon are also ridiculously rare, like Pidgey or Exeggcute (you're better off using Jirachi's wish to get Chansey, rather than trying to get her the normal way).

Rescue Team also has easier difficulty curve and you can make anything a god by using Gummis and vitamins. After a certain point, even the regular attack will oneshot everything. Azurill, the slayer of legendaries and Kecleon recruiter.

Third versions are shit. The IGN review (iirc) is particularly awful because of this. They spend the entire time bashing EoS for being just another third version to make more money, and then they go ahead and suggest to get Platinum instead, because EoS has no new content according to them. And as someone who has actually played Diamond, Platinum, EoT and EoS I can say that's just pathetic.
