What is Gamefreak going to do once we go over 1000 pokemon? That many mons is just not manageable.

I'm more curious on how a 1000+ national dex at the start would work, would probably spell disaster but at the same time, the variety and lack of repetition would be nice.

My idea would be to do something like only have maybe 300 or so naturally available in a region, but have the rest be able to be transferred in if you really want them. That way the number you have to acquire in-game is manageable but veteran players can still use whatever they want.

But that’s crazy. It’ll never happen.

I feel like it's something they're trying to avoid, with things like Megas and Alolan forms. These let them make new designs without actually introducing new species.

Stuff like Oricorio, Wishiwashi and Lycanroc would've been separate species insteads of forms a few gens ago.

I don't understand why exactly they would want to slow down, though. It can't be a mechanics thing, with so many alternate forms, they must've internally hit 1000 "species" a long time ago.

The video games have dropped the national dex.

There are a multitude of Pokemon who haven't been featured in a TCG set in years.

The anime doesn't really have to struggle with this verbatim, but certainly in terms of merchandising, it must be getting harder and harder.

We’ll have more than 32 boxes. The current limit I think is simply based on how much space can be put on a card. Switch cards are bigger, so more space for boxes... assuming they don’t go the way everyone else has and keeps save on the device proper.

They'll stop bothering with Pokedex entries altogether and just give us a small handful of new mons each gen. Instead of giving every mon equal time in the spotlight they'll just focus all their attention on the Gen 1 mons and fan favorites.

When we reach Pokemon no. 1000 I expect GF to call it a day and end the franchise right then and there.
At that point its employees will be sick of developing the same games over and over again and they would have already made enough money to retire comfortably.

Ideally, they would keep making viable Pokémon until it became impossible to fully predict an opponent's full team. We're a long way from that time, since all VGC teams are still 3/4 the same as each other.

it's not unmanageable. GF can easily make a longer game that incorporates every single Pokemon ever into it but they won't, since they're lazy and greedy. they could also add more than 70 mons a gen but that would require even more effort, and as GF doesn't want another BW fiasco (even though gen 5 was the only true step forward this franchise has had in the past decade) they're afraid it will just blow up

The games already have plenty of repetition. The Switch titles should do away with these and introduce more unique evolutionary lines.

Obviously that's what happened in Alola. And Kalos. And BW2 Unova. And Sinnoh. My apparently-not-sarcastic-enough point was that they've been addressing and managing this issue for half the existence of the series now.
