Do you keep starters in or do you switch them out for better Pokemon/Pokemon that fit your team better eventually?

I use my starter because, before post-game, I only catch Pokemon I intend to use for the rest of the game. Until I'm the champ, nobody but forced gifts and legendaries gets boxed.

It really depend of the generation to be honest

I just use what I like. If they're a part of my top 6 or everything else I like just isn't available, then I keep them. On subsequent runs, I use entirely new Pokemon and usually get to all three.

Never dropped a starter and never will. Won't use all 3 in my first run-through of a game again, like I did with Gen V, would have had a lot more fun team building, on reflection.

Keep them, unless I've used one before/have one competitively ready. I don't use the same mon twice, I'll even challenge myself to not evolve a starter all the way (I'm using Quilava in HG)

I box the starter given to me by the professor and use other Pokemon as my "starter",
For example, I treated Budew as my "starter" during my Platinum playthrough.
