I mean I guess you can like or whatever but at least Serena was different compared to the other girls and acted like, well, a real girl. She is similar to May in terms of how they started their journeys (tagging along to find out what they really want to do) but was given more screentime to develop and was more written better

She literally got the most amount of episodes other than Dawn. If you mean those various AG fillers where May doesn't do anything but stand in the background, well that's generally the same for every character. In all the big Ash-centric eps, or the general fillers that don't focus on anyone but pokemon, Ash's companions are generally treated like background material and just make exposition comments.
