They supposedly added Battle Royal because players were doing it on their own in Gen 6, but there's no way for us to cheese the game to simulate an older format unless both players just agree to only use Pokemon and moves that were legal in a previous generation. That doesn't do anything for battle mechanics that have changed since then. Teams that worked in Gens 1-3 would never work with the current mechanics.
