Gamefreak doesn't develop the Mystery Dungeon or Ranger series so said statement doesn't apply to those games as they aren't part of the core series.
Nintendo has already said they will keep supporting the 3ds so it isn't outside of the realm of possibility.
And I'm not a patternfag, after all, they did say they want to surprise us and for them to be unpredictable. I was using that example to show that what i originally said had been done before and wasn't an outlandish statement.
