why is an optional, non-enforced "online mode" a retarded idea? It seems to me most people end up exploiting the game one way or another, completely ignoring the breeding/etc mechanisms because they require too much effort.

except that the only reason everyone needs to inject is because everyone else is doing it. If instead people concentrated on just the basics instead of a completely min-maxed pokemon, everyone would be happier. The game would become more of a magic the gathering type of game where collecting and trading actually matter.

well, I was thinking of a two-league format - e.g. you could make an additional "online" save file that could not communicate with the offline version, and only allow for online play to prevent any kind of cheating. Sorry if it was not clear in the OP, although when I called it a "mode" that is what I was implying

On top of thathe wants you to connect to the internet to access your savefile. Literally taking away portability from Pokemon. and honestly wheat is the beef with cheaters, seriously who gives a fuck about what people do with their games, in fact I'd argue they have made the game better by telling GF that we don't want to grind for 4 weeks to make 1 team (Gen 4 was so awfully grindy for this shit).

Imagine if every magic the gathering player had to throw $400+ dollars in a deck in order to compete... Normal players wouldn't find the game that exciting. Gamefreak should try to captalize in the collect and trade part of the game, which is completely forgotten because anyone can just inject anything they want.

The point of Pokemon is being able to play wherever and whenever, it's called Pocket Monsters for a reason. You can't have always online.

And the second, while more likely/possible, would break the playerbase entirely.

Keep wishing for that and we might get f2p Pokemon on iOS/Android with loot boxes where you get 2-3 pokeballs a day if you are lucky and the entire thing is designed to either make you soul crushingly grind to keep up or use microtransactions to buy lootboxes and "tickets" you use to even get a chance at catching Pokemon.

It'd make so much money it'd make Nintendo stocks break every single ceiling, but it'd fucking suck.

but anon, most urban public places have wifi, and people can also hotspot with their phones. The structure of servers to keep Pokemon running as a cloud game would be so costly it'd turn the game into a service, and a service needs consistent revenue to run. When the control of every single Pokemon that spawns in your profile/save is on their end, then you combine everything and it really is just the next logical step for revenue.

And hotspotting, not only is that impractical and looks very bad for Nintendo to publish a product that requires third party services to run in handheld mode, but also mobile plans in the rest of the world and especially Japan aren't nearly as accessible as they are in America. Japanese phone plans are limited and expensive, and don't get me started on places like Australia.

you can say that about any online game. Not all online games have microtransactions, and when they do, not all of then are of a pay2win nature, most are cosmetic.

Fair point, but I still don't see the issue if you have wifi almost everywhere these days (schools, government buildings, shopping malls) and the feature is optional

I do want them to make battles much more interesting. On a fucking neintendo switch there should be no reason for battles to look like 2 pokemon, standing still across from each other, taking turns to attack.
Just add in features to make it more dynamic. More custom animations for Pokemon moves, Have pokemon actually look battle damaged, show pokemon dodging attacks or attacks missing.
I cannot understand why, for a game that's 20+ years old, you still mostly have to use your IMAGINATION for the combat. Step that shit up, Gamefreak.

Combine Ride pokemon and HMs by just making it so that you can ride your own pokemon without teaching them an HM. Also make it so you don't have to wear that stupid outfit. In fact, be more free with more of the in-game abilities, like teleport, sweet scent. Let any "cutting" move cut things. Let you use fire type moves to light campfires or create torches in caves. Just let your pokemon work in overworld more like it does in battle to enrich your experience.
