What exactly makes a trainer a Pokémon Master? Are there any qualities a master should have in order to be considered one?

I don't think that the criteria for becoming a Pokemon master were ever explained in canon or otherwise.

I always liked to imagine it was being able to have a Legendary/Mythic Pokemon willingly be part of your team.

ash could have been a frontier brain and his goal to be a master wasn't reached

so master is pretty just an "open title" with no real end goal
