How do the people in Pokemon know what half the fucking species of Pokemon are? Snakes? Birds? Turtle? Horse? Like, how do they know what those are to label them as such?

it's only possible because every fictional world has real life references and needs those because there is nothing but the world to draw inspiration from.

the series is just a testament of whoever wrote all of it. Meowth was based on the real life cat a friend of a writer owned. the other part is about all these Neko charms in stores in Japan and what not.

Obviously they know what cats are because Meowth is a cat. They know what snakes are because Ekans is a snake. They know what birds are because Pidgey is a bird.

You're assuming that real world animals exist and Pokemon are classified based on their relation to them, when "cat" could just as easily be a term they came up with for Pokemon like Meowth.

Because they use those words to refer to a group of similar Pokemon. Serperior, Ekans, Arbok, and Seviper are not directly connected, but they're obviously visibly similar. They're snakes. Same with the cats etc.

That's just stupid, untranslatable wordplay getting fucked up in translation. The "Yado" in Yadoran (slowbro's name) comes from Yadonushi, which is an animal that's being infected by a parasite of some sort. The yado prefix, on its own, means something akin to "staying somewhere (like when you stay at a hotel)", so the Japanese word for hermit crab (yadokari) literally translates to something like "lodging borrower" (one of the RBY translators suggested "squatter" as a better translation). In this case, the "yado" in Slowbro's yadokari is coming from Yadonushi (parasite host) instead of just Yado (lodging).
