Recently met my estranged nephew for the first time. To my surprise the kid is a big Pokemon fan, especially when it comes to the TCG. He hasn't played any of the games though.

Was going to buy him a 3DS and a copy of Ultra Sun as a late X-mas gift, but just learned he left $300 worth of cards in his pants on laundry day and they got ruined in the washer. Now I'm thinking instead I should pick him up a bunch of booster packs. I could also throw in my old DSI XL and a copy of HeartGold for him to play with. Since Ultra Sun is newer, I'm on the fence though.

Basically, which one would make the better gift for a 9 year old:

-3DS and copy of Ultra Sun
or
-Big Ass set of Booster Packs/ Those Ultra Beast Premium Collections and a DSI XL w/ HeartGold
