Pic unrelated. Let's say GF decides to ditch the Grass, Fire, Water trio for one generation. What type trio would you want for the starters?

I want Electric, Ice, and Poison. They're all neutral against each other, have no immunities, and each can cause different status conditions. Also they represent Yellow, Cyan and Magenta, whereas the current starter types are Green, Red and Blue.

Poison isn't magenta it's too dark. Psychic and Fairy are closer to magenta.

Well, there are three that fit the pattern, right:
Flying, Electric and Ground
Flying, Rock, Fighting
Fighting, Psychic, Dark

Combing some of those, like a trio of Fighting/Ground, Dark/Electric and Psychic/Flying would be cool. If I wasn't thinking about balance, I'd pick Ghost, Fighting and Fairy

I know Poison isn't a perfect fit, bit it's the best fit. Poison isn't exactly an "elemental" attack like Electric and Ice, but it sorta feels like it y'know?

Also, if you take a color selector to a lot of Poison typee, most of them aren't actually purple. Some are, but most are desaturated magenta.

Only if Dark was changed to resist Psychic, which would invalidate Miracle Eye as a move. If it didn't, then (depending on whether your rival picked like traditional rivals or Dawn/Lucas in Sinnoh and Hau in Alola) either everyone would pick the Dark-type because immense advantage of type immunity, or no one would choose the Psychic-type; unless it got early access to Bug-type or Fairy-type coverage, and even then the Psychic-type would be less favored than Chikorita was in Gen II.

I personally like the idea of a "perfect" type triangle; that is, a triad of types that each resist one other and are weak to the third. Unfortunately, there are only three of those (thus far) in Pokémon; the tried-and-true Grass-Fire-Water, as well as Rock-Flying-Fighting, and Rock-Fire-Steel. I personally like the Grass-Fire-Water triad, but it'd be interesting to see a repeat of what Gen 6 did in terms of the secondary typings being a triad; I could similarly forgive the secondary typings being an "imperfect" type triangle, so long as it isn't just Water/Dark, Fire/Psychic, Grass/Fighting.

Fighting/Rock/Flying
It functions the same as Water/Fire/Grass but we already had too many Fighting type starters

I never get this argument. The rival doesn't just spam their starter's primary STAB and nothing else. Every starter gets a Normal-type move early on, too.

Poison, Grass, and Ground for me. And leave out secondary typings, but make sure the Grass one doesn't suck since they suck so often, like Meganium, and Serperior, those ones are so bad in game it's kind of sad. Like, make it more like Sceptile where it has actual offense stats and good moves, maybe a killer signature move.

If you'd ever played BW or BW2 you'd know Serperior comes with Overgrow. Contrary wasn't available for years and years. And overgrow Serperior pretty much need to use Coil or something to do any damage, even in-game. It really sucks.

Sceptile, in-game at least, is pretty beastly. And before gen-4 Leaf blade was its signature move.

He doesn't need any, because he perpetually floats. He's Flying-Type. Zekkonian Charmander is fighting type, and Zekkonian Bulbasaur is Rock-type.

Like I'm real sure GF really put that much thought into the typing balance of bulbasaur of the original trio when they made it also poison type (because hurr poison powder like every single other grass mon except for the single one that doesn't have poison powder, tangela, which sucks) making it highly allergic to anything that even looked like it could use a psychic move, the most over used and over powered type in gen1 by so much that the only counter to psychic types were other psychics.

Sure, but it still would be weak to ice, fire, bug, flying and, ironically, poison.

You will never have a perfectly balanced trio of types for starters.
