For all we know, there won't be a direct at all because they're gonna wait until E3 to reveal more games, especially since they're lacking in Heavy Hitters for the Holidays that are guaranteed to make bank to a universal audience that we're aware of.

If we take the average the time between Directs and Mini Directs then I predict that the big Direct is coming on January 21st or January 22nd. The average of each time span between each Direct is 10.1818181818 and so on. Just some quick math to make an educated guess. I actually did the same thing before sun and moon, taking the average of how many Pokemon were added each generation until then to get a rough estimate and adding the final average to 721 got me 801. Just one off the final total for SM so bearing that in mind I think my estimate might have a bit of credibility.

They literally announced Pokemon Switch was in development last year, if they were to announce it at E3 this year and play their cards right, they'd have the closest thing to PokeMania again, surpassing even Pokemon GO's small burst of hype.
Hype Culture is a very, VERY scary thing, and if China's finally getting their hands on the Electric Rat, this can and WILL make serious bank.

It'll be quite some time before Zeraora is officially revealed, likely sometime in the middle of spring accompanying a Movie21 Trailer that gives more details regarding the plot and characters.
Until that Electric Lucario Fucker gets revealed, GameFreak's not going to want to say a word about Pokemon Switch just yet in fear of shitting all over Zeraora and making it seem incredibly underwhelming in comparison.
E3 comes and goes, Movie21 drops in July for Japan, and after all is said and done they can focus full-time on marketing the FUCK out of Pokemon Switch with seemingly no end.

It IS a pattern, but it'd also make no sense to cannibalize Zeraora's fanfare with an entirely new set of games which in turn would cannibalize Movie Sales, as people would much rather wait for Movie22 so they can acquire Gen 8's first Mythical instead and just grab Zeraora from a distribution much later.

Why does it need it period? Genuine question. Gen 8 could be announced tomorrow and literally no one would care about gen 7's shit anymore. It's not like it isn't available in game yet, or out of the majority audience's knowledge.
