Do not catch a Mudbray if you want the game to not be complete easy mode(for how much a Pokemon game can be challenging anyway).

You can evolve Charjabug in Blush Mountain and Crabrawler the first time you go in Mount Lanakila, just behind Tapu Village.

the first trial will make you underestimate the trials to come, however the 2nd and 3rd trails are probably the hardest in the game. Also all important battles have perfect ev's iv's and natures so be cautious

If you decide not to heed this advice, I actively advise against taking ANY advice for single player Pokemon. This is a series where single player is more fun the less you know about the game. Once you get into natures, IVs, and optimal move sets, you'll realize how pisseasy and shallow single player actually is. So, just go in blind and enjoy the shit anime cutscenes for what they are.

Play with Exp. Share off and on Set. Makes the game slightly more challenging and fun. I did it for Sun (plus Gen 7 only mons) and, it was pretty fun. Also no Z-Moves.

For UM i added 2 extra layers: no items in-battle and thematic run (Mono-Water). I actually got swept a couple times, and had some difficulty against a couple Veteran/Ace trainers. Even had to retcon the "no Z-Move" rule to beat Totem Araquanid without overlevelling.
Still on the 3rd island, but it is the most fun i had in a non-Nuzlocke Pokémon game in a long time.
So much i'm actually planning on restarting after beating the game to do a Rock-Monotype (that's gonna be brutal).

I picked up moon when it was released, and enjoyed some aspects but ultimately found that I didn't feel any kind of replay value unlike other pokemon games and it felt less adventure-like compared to other games.

In-battle items (as long as not spammed, or else you an Toxic-stall everything) and Z-Moves are fine, since most strong trainers use them (i'm using Z-Moves myself).

Theme runs are pure personal choice that give an identity to the run. I'll remember it as my Water-Monotype run, not "generic team #27". And the Gen7 only run was also a personal choice, because i wanted to test as many of the new mons as possible.

Here's some real tips that aren't just bad memes:
