I don't think that's ever been the case. The games sell millions while the animes ratings declined rapidly after the fad ended in 2001/2002, and then rapidly again after 2010.

I disagree... I'd suspect that even now, most non-gamers' first thought about Pokemon is Ash and Pikachu. Even among people who never watched it, it was so ubiquitous and well-known that just about everybody had heard of it through the anime.

Casuals just know Ash/Misty/Brock and the original 151 pokemon. That's it. They watched the first season and played the first games and barely anything after.

Yes, I agree, but that accounts for far more people than those who know anything beyond that.

And there are even more people who couldn't name Misty or Brock or more than one Pokemon. But they'll hear the word Pokemon and think "that Japanese cartoon with Pikachu."

I've literally had discussions about "Pokemon" where someone enters assuming we're talking about the anime.
I've also been part of the reverse situation where someone mentioned Pokemon and I assumed they were talking about the games.

It is the case in eastern Europe, when nintendo was never really popular and still isn't. I'd bet most people here who watched pokemon in early 2000s don't even know there was a game, or think the games are anime tie-in and not vice versa.
