How is Armaldo supposed to work in my headcanon. Armaldo is an aquatic animal but is weak to water? It's supposed to be able to swim, but the anime portrays rock types as fucking dying if they even get wet. Can't they just give Armaldo storm drain or something?

It's a fossil. Makes sense that water would erode it or do some other kind of damage.

The non-fossil version that we're getting in gen 8 in the region based on Spain will be Bug/Water.

It's pretty clear that Pokemon attacks have some sort of magical properties. I.E. A water type attack is different from actual water. Which is why Pokemon like Stunfisk and Armaldo are weak to Water type attacks, but can live underwater with no ill effects.

It's one of those cases when 3 types fit. It is originally a Water-dwelling Bug with a hard Rock-like shell.

Probably ended up Rock because of Fossil, and Bug because they didn't want another Water-type Fossil.

The curious thing is that some Dex entries also say it can't live in the water anymore because the oceans' composition changed since its time, but its ability is Swift Swim. Maybe that's also a lore reason for it not being Water anymore.

So yeah, for your headcannon, either go with the magical properties of >>34695975 , or the difference in the current Water and the primordial Water, and how it can't live in the former (supposedly hurts its organism).

I'd like if it had another ability, tho. Swift Swim is fine as HA (tho it gets outsped by any slightly fast Scarfer/Booster), but it should have Tough Claws instead of Battle Armor. Its claws are more enphasized in the Dex entries than its Armor, since it's the CLAW Fossil.
And, more importantly, it'd be even godlier in my Rock monotype.

We need more water-dwellers that aren't water type. So far we have armaldo, cradily, eelektross, stunfisk and malamar, but we have to go even deeper.

That some of them end up being weak to water is a by-product that we must endure. Is not like there aren't already plenty of water-type aquatic pokemon that take neutral damage from water, corsola and swampert come to mind.

We have always filled gaps in the genome with the DNA of other Pokemon, and if their genetic code was pure, many of them would have quite different types!
But you didn't ask for reality, you asked for every fossil Pokemon to be rock type!

Fossil Pokemon do not possess their natural typing: they are not literally resurrected, but genetically reconstructed as best they can and this process leaves all fossil pokemon with the thematic and mechanical typing of 'rock' to demonstrate that imperfect process.
Then again, Relicanth is fuckin' rock type, so maybe rock type was just a SUPER popular typing during Pokemon-Dinosaur Times and this theory is full of shit?
