Only partially related, but I got SMT IV recently and I've been struggling through the game a bit. I'm only up to the Medusa fight and I'm having a hard time getting through the fight. I'm level 13, as are most of my demons. I only have one demon with Zan. Am I underleveled? Do I just need more demons with Zan? Or am I just flatout bad at the game?

Minotaur and Medusa are considered the hardest part of the game due to lack of options available to the player at that point. Try fusing Zhu Tun She, it's immune to most of Medusa's attacks.

Your level is fine. Just try to find demons that resist/null her Gun/Zio skills (Leveling a Gremlin to 14, for example, gets you a good demon with Null Elec) and try to have more demons with Zan skills. IIRC, you should be able to fuse a Toubyou (the snakes in a jar) around that point, and he has Zanma.
