I started playing VC Gold after beating USUM and it's honestly the first time I've enjoyed playing Pokemon again in a really long time.

I'm not sure why you haven't hacked your 3DS so you don't have to pay for ROMs, though.

So you can have it ready to play Day One without downloading. Basically if you want the game right off the bat it's worth it. It's not like modern pre-ordering where you don't know what the game might be like. It's Crystal, you know exactly what you're getting. If you want to play it the second it drops, you pre-load. If you don't want to, or are busy that day, or don''t mind waiting the 5 seconds it takes to download, you can (and probably should) wait.

They have fixed DV combinations (or IVs for you newer kids), which means you can't have a shiny with perfect stats but that doesn't really matter for singleplayer.
It also means that while breeding, an egg with a shiny parent has a 1/64 chance of being shiny so make sure your Red Gyarados and Odd Egg are male.
