>>34704669Because Plant type, while more accurate, sounds unweildy and does not roll off the tongue like Grass type does. The names for things do not need to be literal. We all know Grass is the Plant/Nature type, so it's really a non-issue.
>>34704847Sand is a type of ground material that you walk on. Rocks, unless smoothed and flattened by humans, aren't. That's not the real answer though -- it's because sand behaves far more like soil than a rock. Soil and sand are both vaguely fluid, while a rock is on single, solid thing. And the lines between soil, sand and mud is fairly blurry, so they're all put under Ground.
In much the same way they tried to flesh out Rock and make it interesting by introducing fossils, they probably wanted to make Ground have a little something more, so they gave it a sand affiliation. Desert-dwelling creatures needed some kind of type association, and doesn't Ground just fit better than Rock for that?
>>34704850>>34704797I can explain most Ground/Rock types. Onix and Larvitar both have bodies made of rock, but also are known sub-terrainean dwellers. (I think Onix is loosly based on an earthworm.) The Rhydon line are trickier, but they do have those horns that work sort of like an excavation tool. I think they fall in the category of Nidoking and Nidoqueen, where the only reason for the Ground type seems to be that they are large animals that could cause the ground to quake, and they live in dry conditions.
I honestly dunno with the Golem line. I mean, a golem is a figure made out of earth, but that's just it's name. It's not really a golem. I gues it's just because rocks come from the ground.
>>34704967They're not made of rock per say, but rather they have rocky hides.
>>34704983Humans bury their dead, and thus bones are something that belongs in the ground.
