I feel GF wanted to wait a few years before making the jump to Switch while making Gen VII, but Nintendo nixed that and said they wanted it ready for it's first couple years on sale as they thought it was gonna tank again. GF rushed SM/USM out 'cause at that stage they were literally making more powerful DS games when they dropped the 3D effects (and it's always better to recoup some profit from a project than scrap it and lose what you've already invested in it) to concentrate on the Switch (USM being made by the younger staff and how Gen VII turned out as a whole seem to support this).
