Pretty quickly and will rotate them in and out. I tend to end up having like 12 Pokemon following the level curve (or else close enough to) to choose from by the time I'm at endgame.

It's become way easier with the Exp. All or share or whatever the hell in Gens 6 and 7; in fact, I'm pretty sure that's what GF probably had in mind when they put it out there (not that it would end up a much maligned easy mode button). It lets you catch underlevelled shitmons at any point in the game and not have to spend too much time grinding.

Older gens, yeah, it can get tedious just insofar as Exp. Share/leading with an underlevel and then swapping out for the exp not being as a broken, and a longer time is spent grinding.

I rarely have more than 2-3 Pokémon by the third Gym, just because I've played the early games so many times and used pretty much everything available at that point. I could spice things up by playing the DS/3DS games more but they take longer and have slower pacing so they aren't great to just pick up and play on a whim. I usually have a full team by Gym 6 unless I'm holding out for something specific.

Around the 5th gym seems the most agreed upon. But not having a full team of semkx always happened to me in all of my playthroughs.

Approximately add 1 pokémon before each badge so 2 for the 1st one, 3 for the 2nd, etc.
Maybe 5 pokémons before the 6th and full team before the 8th and victory road/elite 4.
But sometimes I switch out pokémons mid adventure so I'll spend some time grinding them to ok level before next badge.

you can get tangela as soon as you can use surf. You don't need to go through Cinnabar and Seafoam Islands to surf from fucking Palette town.

If it's past the 4th gym, it's starting to get a bit iffy in any gen that isn't 2. If it's past the 5th gym, it has to be something very worth putting on the team. Past the 6th gym is too late to use.

I usually catch only one or two Pokemon in each area, so I typically have a team of six by the third or fourth badge.

i usually don’t have a full team of six. i like doing a team of four or five, cuz i figured if the elite 4 doesn’t have a full team, why should i?

i did a run of leaf green once and all i had was Charizard, Seadra, Scyther, and Jolteon.

Gen 2 just has a lot of Pokémon that you can't get until the ass-end of the game, locked away in Kanto or even Mt. Silver. HGSS fixes it a bit with the Safari Zone; although it's a pain in the ass to use, you can get basically any of the worthwhile late-game Pokémon five badges into the game if you follow a guide, more than long enough for them to make their mark in your playthrough.

It depends on who I want to use, at times I go till the 2nd Gym only with 1/2 Pokémon. Usually I'm with a full team between 5th and 6th Gym, but at times even right before the 8th Gym. Maybe it's too late but...

I try to train as many different Pokemon as possible, preferably ones I've not trained before, and cycle them out so that the trainers have higher levelled Pokemon and the game is challenging.

Gen 1: 4-6 badges (Includes remakes)
Gen 2: 3-7 (Remakes: 2 -4)
Gen 3: Almost fucking never for some reason but I guess 7 is a solid guess
Gen 4: 4-5 badges
Gen 5: 5-7 badges
Gen 6: I played it once so I'm not entirely sure but I think it was about 7
Gen 7: 3-4 badges

As a note from Gen 5 onward I always tried to play with Pokemon from the current gen only which sucked for 6 and 7 as it so happens

I just feel like that's all I need. I try not to overlevel them too much so I can have a bit of a challenge, though.

I can count on one had the number of games I have beat with a full team of 6. Most of the time I only need 4 and 2 slaves to make it through the game.

This thread is puzzling. I have 6 pokemon by the first gym if I can. Sometimes I haven’t cought 6 pokemon by the first gym but that rarely happens. I like catching all the pokemon and they fill 6 slots before they go in the box.

Do you guys not catch pokemon on the you just keep a few and box everything else?
