See, I don't like the face or the goofy arms. Maybe it's ridiculous for me to wish these cartoons were less cartoonish, but there ya have it. Ghost and Dark are my favorite types, but there are too many Pokemon I can't bring myself to like on the grounds that GF squandered any potential coolness in favor of silly design elements.

And what's wrong with that? Most sarcophagi have faces that were carved and painted into them to resemble their occupants. This could have served as a suitable face for Cofagrigus that would have expanded on its pre-evolution's designed concept. Imagine just a pair of eyes peering through a shadowed, expressionless mask. How is that not a superior design for a Pokemon based on a sarcophagus, as opposed to the wacky-waving-inflatable-arm-flailing-tube-Ghost that we have now?

one of the core tenets when designing Pokemon is for them to be love-able, even the scary ones. this has been part of Pokemon designs since gen 1. for something to be relateable to a human it has to express emotions, and faces are the quickest way to do that.

I love Golbat and Crobat, but it feels weird going off of Zubat, an eyeless bat that permanently lives in caves. What's with Game Freak and EYES, man?

Eyes are an important indicator, and that's not so much an artistic design thing so much as it is a "HARDWIRED INTO OUR BRAINS THANKS TO NATURE" thing. Why do you think so many animals out there have eyespots and/or have various body patterns and colorations to hide their eyes? Eyes tell animals where an animal's head is, and knowing where another animal's head is is super important to animals for obvious reasons. As such, it's glued right into our brains that anything without eyes that should have eyes is automatically unsettling or "not right", and those make for the coolest Pokemon! Why do you think a good number of the Ultra Beasts purposely lack eyes? It makes them more alien!

Look at pic related. Notice how its real eye is hidden by the stripe, and how it has that super conspicuous fake eyespot to fool predators into thinking that its head is where that eyespot is because it's way better to lose a fin than your head? Eyes, yo. It's not merely a design thing.

Still, I'm not saying that all Pokemon should just not have eyes forever. I'd just like to see more eyeless Pokemon more often, that's all.

I realize it's pretty much me alone vs. everyone else here, but you all just keep making arbitrary and generalized claims to justify why GF keeps ruining potentially cool designs by slapping derpy faces onto them.
I'll even refute the point that Pokemon 'have to express emotion' by citing Claydol, Sigilyph, Cryogonal, and Yamask as counter-examples. These are all faceless or virtually faceless Pokemon that do not express any discernible emotion, and they're all pretty cool designs.
Furthermore, a pair eyes can do so much more for adding personality to the design of some Pokemon than a retarded evil grin. As a very opinionated example: Voltorb looks cool, while Electrode looks stupid.

I'm somebody that loves limiting expression in designs and things with unconventional faces or straight up lacking a face but I think your problem is that you're too hung up on what you perceive to be the "potential" of the designs to focus on their actual appeals and why they are crafted in the way they are. Even though I like a lack of mouth, I think Voltorb looks stupid and Electrode looks great.
As a side-note, Yamask is perfectly expressive. It has a regular mouth and its eyes are usable like any other's.

Look at it this way. GameFreak had one chance at a coffin/sarcophagus Pokemon--any more would be redundant, it's not like dog and cat mons which offer such a variety of design opportunities for every generation. So instead of this sarcophagus Pokemon being the grim, creepy badass it could have been, we have a cartoony fucker with jazz hands and a derpface.
Yes, I call that squandered potential, and yes I will bitch about it, no matter how GF and its cumrags insist that Pokemon should be 'ruvable'.

I'm actually in the same boat that I would have preferred Drapion had it kept the cool, shakily unsure face and to this day unique eyes of Skorupi. Thing is, most people would disagree with me in that case because while I don't like its face, it is in fact well-designed. The small pupils, agape mouth and the white drool-like extensions from its mouth give it a very feral, monstrous, vacant-minded look that benefits the design overall as a result. Those are the very things that fans of it will tend to like it for and I compliment its success.

I should have addressed this with my other reply, but you're right, and you're actually supporting a point I meant to make, albeit not very well. Yamask does indeed achieve a level of personality and emotional expression, but it does so with minimal facial features and without its evolution's stupid grin. It's one of the reasons I take so much issue with Cofragigus.Yamask is one of my favorite designs, and its evolution dropped so many excellent design elements.

I wouldn't consider myself caving in to popular opinion. Drapion sets out to do a thing, it achieves a thing and people like it for such thing. It's well made, just not for me. Just like a bed can be well-made so that it's comfy and soft for relaxing on which some people want, a bed can also be firm and hold its position which makes you feel safer. Neither's wrong and I personally like the latter.

I used to hate Cofagrigus as well, actually. For similar reasons, even. I liked how Yamask was a cute little past-life spirit with a sad attachment to a material object and this is where I'll get passionate, there aren't enough fucking ghosts that have a reason to be attached or chained to the living world - they just are ghosts to be ghosts. Fuck the Ghost type. But then, and this is something both specific to me and you, I stopped putting what I wanted over what was there. I found things to enjoy and like about Cofagrigus and though it was different from what I liked in Yamask, that's no reason for me not to like what's in Cofagrigus. They're both great in their own right. I'm in the minority of the fanbase where I don't put expectations in any Pokemon and like to see them interact or complement each other with their differences; I actually prefer it when there's drastic differences in the line so if I don't like one I might like the other and learn to see the beauty in both through their companionship.

Okay, sure. It looks like it could be a promising objectmon, and its design being based on a spaceship suits the series' recent plot elements with all the aliens and wormholes and shit. That said, I would do something with the fins to kind of set it apart from a standard rocket shape--maybe more streamlined and with different colors/shades? There is a sheer difference in mentality between us, I think. I can not for the life of me see anything that redeemable about Cofagrigus, no matter the intentions of the design team and no matter how many people ended up liking it. Same with so many other Pokemon, which I consider and will always consider to be poorly-designed shitmons. I don't need to be told that it's just my opinion, I know that and so does every other asshole on here who autistically screeches about Pokemon they don't like. But, there is always the vague chance and vain hope that GF will actually listen...and maybe in Gen 8 we'll actually see Pokemon with cooler and more minimalistic designs. Haha, I actually go the other direction with Pyukumuku in finding its design -too- simplistic. There was a thread some weeks ago in which I described Pyukumuku as a 'useless lump of nothing' and received a good bit of hate for it. This thread is like deja fucking vu.

Thing is, I might actually like Pyukumuku a little bit if not for its movepool, or perhaps if it had a more impressive evolution. Its utility reminds me too much of Wobbuffet, which I also never could stand.

Lol. Ribombee is a guilty pleasure for me. Where Cofagrigus was a Pokemon I wanted to like but ended up hating, Ribombee is one I want to hate but kind of like. Nevertheless, I absolutely agree about the design points between Cutiefly and Ribombee. I would much rather have seen Ribombee retain the physical features of a fly, rather than the kawaii bee that it became.
As for examples of Pokemon that follow my points, I did mention some earlier--Yamask, Claydol, Sigilyph, Cryogonal. For good measure I'll throw in some of my absolute favorites, Bisharp and Aegislash. These are the kinds of 'cool' (some will say 'edgy') designs that I deeply appreciate.
There are also plenty of more or less minimalistic Pokemon I adore that are geared more toward being cute, pretty, or 'lovable' as a previous poster suggested. Linoone is a prime example of this.
And, contrary to my original post, there are even some Pokemon with 'evil faces' that I really like--in particular, Trevenant and Haunter (not Gengar, fuck Gengar).

Dex entries constantly talk about ghost types and their playful, gleefully sadistic personalities; a creepy grin is the perfect portrayal of this.

I think part of the problem with the theory in this thread is that pokemon were generally shown in static-ish sprites. That fact meant you had to get a complete feel for a pokemon from a single image, and the face has to perfectly portray the ‘standard’ version of a pokemon. Hence why things like ghosts have the spooky grin and whatnot.

Anon, calm down. The argument is that the sinister prankster theme is super common among ghost types, and so is the smug look... Gasty and co. set this precedent, and it's been kept up in the personalities of ghosts throughout the following gens.

Yo this thread was pretty much an open invitation for people to rag on Pokemon and each other's opinions, my own included. I'm not worried about that in the slightest.
I also agree with Zubat poster about the designs of its evolutions. Not just the eyes, the mouths as well. However, I kind of turn a blind eye to these, because Crobat is Brobat no matter how stupid it looks.
And, even though it fully supports my opinion, I can't bring myself to agree with his/her points about Ultra Beasts, just on the grounds that I hate all the UBs.

I see what you're saying about sprites, and that point meshes with what other posters have been saying about Pokemon needing to present some level of personality. However, I maintain that this is very poorly executed with Cofagrigus and quite a few others, and I also maintain that the personality of every Ghost-type does not need to be that of a mischievous trickster, nor represented every time by a 'spooky grin'. I will always prefer the sarcophagus Pokemon in my head over the one GameFreak actually gave us.

Those mouth designs don't bother me nearly as much as the grins, but I can definitely understand why you would be annoyed by them. Shit like that is why I don't like anime. That said, Milotic and Serperior are two of my favorites, dumb mouths notwithstanding.

I understand that completely, but I fucking hate it and simply wish GF would change its approach to Ghost types. And for people to stop using "Well that's just how it is" arguments.

It would have the same overall shape and color scheme, but the colors would be more subdued, giving it an aged appearance that suits its concept. The mask from Yamask, instead of becoming a tiny bauble in the middle of its forehead, would instead cover the area where the face would be. Instead of four Sticky Hand arms, it would have two arm-like appendages seemingly comprised of shadowy vapor or ectoplasm. Its hands and fingers would be thin and gaunt in appearance, not rounded, and its animated sprite would show Cofagrigus clutching its mask as though desperately trying and failing to prise it off (the concept being that the mask to which Yamask is emotionally attached eventually overwhelms and physically takes over as it evolves). Only its eyes would show through the mask; they would still be red, but narrower, without pupils, and with a sort of otherworldly, even hellish glow. Its overall personality would not be the prototypical mischievous trickster, but that of an ancient soul, trapped and suffocated by its own emotional and spiritual tethers to the physical world, as represented by the mask it can no longer take off.

I hate that Rhyhorn loses its "rocky" look, is smoothed out and becomes bipedal when it evolves into Rhydon. I actually like that Rhyperior attempts to go back to the "rocky" look, but it still looks to close to Rhydon for me to like it.
