>>34748403>Why, though? The originals have no personality or backstory. Their designs are inferior to the ORAS ones, especially Archie. And yet they still had something charming about them.
Sometimes you just end up liking something, even if it's stupid. Or because it's stupid. We're talking about two grown men who think expanding the oceon/the land is a good idea, leading an organization of like minded individuals who support them.
Personalities and backstories aside, both versions have an entirely different feel to them by the way they present themselves and their teams alone:
In RSE, both wore clothes that weren't standing out too much (especially Archie). People around them wouldn't have cared about them a lot if they didn't knew who they where.
In ORAS, their clothes scream 'I AM DIFFERENT, I AM THE BOSS OF TEAM AQUA/MAGMA, LOOK'. They're weird and very out-there, no way people wouldn't stop and stare at those weirdos (especially at Archie).
In RSE, Team Magma are wannabe yakuza thugs while Team Aqua are wannabe pirates.
In ORAS, Team Magma lost the wannabe thugness and became more neat and efficient-like while Team Aqua became pirates.
In RSE, they appear to be more serious and believable (using this term loosely here) while in ORAS, they appear to be more like Saturday Morning Cartoon Villains.
Both versions have their charm points, and there's no doubt they're WAY more polished and have much more to offer in ORAS than they do in RSE. But I still prefer the general atmosphere those guys along with their teams emitted in RSE, even if they are lacking in character individually. The themes they had going on back then were just more to my liking. I get why most people might find that boring/not enough, though.
That being said, I think GF could've brought more out of RSE Archie and Maxie if they would have made them interact more with each other. Or with their team members. Or with someone, ANYONE else than the mute protagonist..1/2
