I have to love that Lusamine dresses both of her children like parasites. Lillie dresses like Nihilego and Gladion dresses (and moves) like Necrozma. Even though she doesn't care about Necrozma in SM or Nihilego in USUM, and in USUM in particular she hates them both - she just decided to dress her children like them anyway. What does this design scheme say about her feelings towards her children?
(More relevant, I agree that SM Lusamine was a lot better. She was one of the most interesting antagonists in the series until USUM turned her into an antihero and then a damsel in distress without even adjusting for key components of her character. Like those frozen Pokémon that were shown to be horrible and then not acknowledged. USUM had vastly better gameplay and battles, but the story of SM was infinitely better.)

When you go to Aether Paradise the first time, Lusamine opens the portal with the gas they got from Nebby when it teleported away with Lillie. In SM, Nihilego came out because Lusamine wanted to catch one of them specifically (evidenced by Ultra Deep Sea being her later destination, and Lillie being dressed as one), and opened a portal that would produce a Nihilego. In USM Nihilego came out because light, fluffy pancakes.

Why did Lusamine open a portal to that world if Megalo Tower in Ultra Megalopolis was her destination? Or is Ultra Deep Sea just the default setting when you open a portal without putting a Cosmog in that cube thing Lusamine had?

The best wy to sum is up is Faba at the end of USUM: he betrayed the whole foundation, backstabbed Lusamine, out everyone's life in danger, basiaclly sold them out. Their reaction?

We all feel your pain, anon. You can also add salt to the wound and mention how any form of reconcilliation between Lusamine and Lillie is axed and just glossed over like it's just self-evident.
They, however, felt the need to tell us that Lusamine goes to see Gladion off as if the plot was ever telling us that there's something more relevant about Gladion/Lusamine than Lillie/Lusamine.
^ The above is further reinforced with the side event where amnesiac Mohn comes to the Aether paradise and the only people involved are Gladion and Lusamine. In reality, Lillie will never know that her father is well and alive and living a happier life because she is treated as somebody who doesn't deserve to know that truth. Let us ignore the fact that for all the obsession over Mohn disappearing (that is always being shoved in our faces), Lusamine's reactions and overall dialogue in that sub event make no sense whatsoever.

I'd like to add that this part at least makes some twisted sense in USUM. She was driven to obsession over Mohn disappearing. Her mental state convinced her that freezing things will protect them from ever being taken away from her/they will remain there safe forever, and this indirectly complements the "misguided hero complex" persona they gave Lusamine in USUM.
This aspect makes a different kind of sense in SM. Lusamine is not really psycho because Mohn disappeared (that is only what Gladion had to make himself believe, by his own admission). She is just psychotically obsessed with UBs and being a mother to them all... I personally don't see much sense in worshipping UBs if your goal is to reach your husband by finding ways to enter their worlds. I'd sooner believe she went obsessive after having to become a single mother and her mother complex went to insane levels, but who even knows.

They even went and missed the best presented opportunity for mother beast when Giovanni said he'd control her mind via the powers of a UB.

USUM is definitely the better game, but god damn did they butcher the story. I think the worst part is that the Recon squad just have the other cover legendary on hand the whole time, and the fact Nebby gets rekt instantly as well means that the whole development with Lillie and Nebby means nothing compared to how it was the centrepoint of SM. It also makes the whole Team Skull twist feel completely pointless. It's like they gutted all the iconic parts of the plot and kept the rest of it so that all the original stuff ended up having little to no payoff, then shoved the Recon squad and Necrozma in. They should have just made the story way different to begin with.

Honestly Guzma and maybe Hau were the only ones not fucked over. At least the ending before the credits doesn't take a million years this time.

yes i agree but while this may be an unpopular opinion i consider Sun and Moon to be one of my favorite games and the ORIGINAL Lillie is my favorite character because of how she grows and in the end if you play male she falls in love with you i really REALLY dislike Ultra Lillie and Anime Lillie cause they are either one re-hasings of the same story told shittier or they are completely messy and dont make sense (Lillie wearing dress in the anime for an example AND TURNIGN BACK INTO IT after she gets the skirt on)

For Emerald and Platinum the plots aren't much different. The villains still have the same ideas and motivations, just the third legendary comes into play. Also there was less character development in the earlier games. BW2 just suffers from going back to a more traditional story after BW1 did something new. BW2 is basically a more traditional Pokemon game set in Alola compared to BW1's new feel, but it's not bad. A lot of the cast had already gone through their character development in the previous games so there was less for them to do and not many new characters.

For USUM Lusamine's character changes significantly and it feels like they just shoved stuff in without thinking about how the story would actually progress.

I think only Pokespe Lillie is portrayed properly..better than SM as well. Maybe Pokespe Lusamine is portrayed the best way too. I agree, though, anime Lillie is utter shit, but that's because anime Lusamine was never a villain to begin with. Just a goofy smother who got rekt by a Nihilego and Faba was the "villain", therefore Lillie also had no subplot of being forced to wear her dress. While I absolutely despise anime Lillie, it does fit because she always wore her own clothes there (Swimsuits, riding outfits, adventure outfit, even the dress is some outfit she likes and went back to after the Lusamine plot).
I;m generally not a fan of char tropes like game Lillie, but I did appreciate the change in SM. USUM, however, ugh.

Clothes aren't a good point, a lot of pokemon characters remember some pokemon. For exemple: Ryuki looks like Zeraora/Tortunator, etc. Those are things that inspire them when making characters. Guzma looks like Xurkitree, Gladion looks like Buzzwole, Lusamine looks like Pheromosa, the list goes on...

She got hurt, mohn probably tried to save them and both kinda got kicked out of that universe.
Mohn became a faller and Lusamine thanks to the poison got obsessed with nihilego.
That´s why she did everything to see it again, that´s while she was a normal person the whole time, the moment nihilego came out she was for seconds in maniac mode.
Same with why she dressed lilly like nihilego.
She wanted nebby so she can finally be one with nihilego.
I mean even the dex helps this theory.

In USM I think the main difference is just that she wasn´t poisoned by nihilego. She saw UB´s and her Husband got away. She tried to make a pokemon to battle UB´s and save alola. In her thought that she can be the only one she got guzma to help her to get pokemons etc.
That´s why she went to fight necrozma, which also don´t make sense, because that means she just got into the metropolis walked to necrozma and just attacked her.
Same stupidness with Reckon Squad suddenly has Solgaleo all this time.
They could have fixed the ending part, by just changing the last part. Instead of Necrozma suddenly coming out and fighting with the legendary in Alola:

>you go to the city
>see how defeated lusamine is
>Necrozma sees the legendary, they fight
>they end up on the tower

there you go. I think they just had a huge time problem, so that´s why some shit doesn´t make sense. Maybe they planned it to be released 2018, but they wanted to release Gen 8 this year so they shoved it into last year.

I don’t get it. The reason Lillie stays in Alola post game is because of the whole “Lillie Loss” thing. She exists here solely for fanservice, but they make her completely pointless as opposed to mostly pointless. You can’t exactly service the fans with that.

I can't decide if removing the whole "Pokemon frozen in stasis" would improve USUM's characterization of Lusamine or not. On one hand, it's very definitely a sign of how batshit insane she's become in SM, which she is not in USUM. On the other hand, it's a clear indication of how two-faced, serious and controlling Lusamine is in USUM, and hints towards her own desire to personally control Necrozma.

I personally don't like SM story, I always felt that it was something that didn't belong in Pokemon. However that story worked, despite its many cliches, because at its core it was just a family drama, so if the players cared about Lillie(and we all know how heavy-handed they were trying to make you like her) they will also like the story.
In USUM instead the story is 75% the same but the focus is shifted from Lillie to Necrozma(who still show up way too late) and this creates the mess everyone is complaining about. GF probably wanted the story to be more "pokemon-like" but they were too lazy to make real changes and just shoehorned the new elements into the old story

I finished USUM recently and I have to say it's a fucking mess! When they announced USUM I was actually excited, I loved SM and I wanted fixes or a sequel. If they did something like Platinum, that completely turned me around on gen IV and made me love it, I would have been so happy. If they had made a sequel like BW2 I'd also be cool since there was so much that could happen after SM witha league being built and all.
Instead we got shoehoned characters and changes that were both too extreme but not different enough.
Lillie and Lusamine's characters make no sense. URS are not only useless but also make no sense. They had been working with Lusamine but knew nothing of battling or pokeballs, yet they still had a pocket legendary!? Also why did they need Nebby to begin with!?
Ironically enough what upsets me the most is when people claim Hau and Guzma are now the focus and more fleshed out... Did we play the same game? Guzma is the same except now we don't see his remorse in ultra space. My boy Hau got it even worse though. Sure he needed something more in SM but I thought having this cheerful rival that's cheerful because of his crippling fear of failure was a really interesting approach... and what did they do in USUM? Just generic and sudden fix of all his personal problems... delivered really flat too. Characters just say he's different and he battles you for the champ title. That's it! The sudden shift worked for Wally because it was sudden and it let you imagine that he probably went through the same trials as you and that's what made him grow... Hau just needed to beat Hala and that's it, complete oversimplification of his bigger issue. Fuck!
Even with the recent disappointing pokemon games at least I still liked that I played them, After SM I was expecting them to get their groove back. Instead USUM was so bad that I'd rather had nothing.
