Ever since I picked up my first pokemon games, I could've fucking sworn that ghost is weak to psychic. I thought that was a simple, well-known truth about pokemon. I freaked out when I realized it only did neutral damage, felt like I lived a lie

Anybody have similar experiences?

This is a common mistake OP. It probably has its origins in Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar being Ghost/Poison, with their Poison typing being weak to Psychic.

OP here, I went over it in my head and the Gengar line did come up a lot when I tried to think about ghosts being weak to psychic moves. I should be happy, considering my favorite type just lost a weakness, but I still feel lied to.

For some reason, I keep thinking Bug is weak against Ice, even though it isn't.

I mean, it'd make sense for Bug to be weak against Ice. Most bugs are sensitive to colder temperatures, after all.

You actually need to alternate L+R. This works via hardware, so playing an older game (RBY or GSC) will still allow this to help. Gamefreak really thinks ahead.

I always thought it was Phanphy.
Like: Fan-Fee
But just recently I learned it was Phanpy
Fan-Pee

I think it's partially due to Donphan's suffix of -phan. And never actually caught a Phanpy in-game

To be honest, I mix up a lot of weaknesses and strenghts related to the more "complex" types like ghost and fighting. The addition of steel and dark only added more confusion. By the time fairy was added, I stopped caring completely. A lot of them aren't very logical.

i still get mixed up thinking rock is weak to ice. i guess cause lots have the secondary ground typing, and ice types are usually ice water. i would always try ice beam/blizzard Stephen's cradily, no wonder that thing didn't fucking die lol

I alternate different button combos with all the buttons on the device save for the power button. it gets closer and closer when I start to find the correct combination. I still hold that it helps. When I don't do it, it tends to take a shit ton of balls to catch something.

Also for some reason, I notice if I don't look directly at the screen while the Pokemon is in the ball, they usually ended up catching better.

Not quite. Male pokemon had a higher potential attack IV, not necessarily a higher attack AV at all times.

i thought that for a long time too. i realized it was because gengar. my memories of fighting ghost types was set by fighting gengar in red. for years after i kept thinking ghost was weak to psychic

Not exactly. If their DV (Gen1&2 IV) had attack higher than defense, you get a male; if defense is higher than attack, you get a female. I don’t remember if it also included the specials... but it probably did.

I had the same problem but with Grass and Fighting. I could've sworn fighting was weak to ground, which I think I got from Infernape & Blaziken, and I thought grass was weak to psychic because of the fuck ton of grass/poison types.

I didn't learn how dark/psychic/ghost interacted until just last year and I've been playing pokemon for 16-17 years now. also thought psychic was pronounced "fy-sick" as a kid
