I remember crushing hard on a girl back in freshman year HS that I sat next to in math, and always doted on her, called her pretty, etc. Now granted I wasn't unattractive and we remained really good friends but she wanted nothing to do with me romantically. She always felt uncomfortable when I did so, too.
Cut to ten years later and I can score pretty much any woman by bragging about my sexual prowess, acting unattainable, acting too good for women and pretending to be more interested in their boyfriends/male friends, but being friendly enough to stick around. The only times I'm ever called cute to my face or when I call a woman hot is when I'm drunk or we're ready to fuck. You gotta recognize that people say those sorts of things in secret unless you've given up your inhibitions, and people generally are too shy/autistic to respond to people who externally show a lot of interest.
