The good:
>best online hands down thanks to PSS
>prebank months were great
>fantastic pokemon designs (especially the box legends)
>fantastic NPC designs
>fantastic FemMC design
>first games to go 3D models
>first games that let you customize your appearance
>had a bunch of fun easter eggs
>friend safari encouraged social aspect
>IVs and EVs being more upfront

The bad:
>kanto pandering
>clearly incomplete story
>lazy box legend encounter set up
>one of the crappiest villains in the series
>forgettable gym leaders
>even more kanto pandering
>annoying "friends" with no personality
>EXP share, amie, capture exp, and no exp scaling made the game 1hit K.O-fest for those who played the game like they did with past games
>least amount of new pokemon from any gen
>kanto pandering out the ass

XY aren't fantastic or anything but they are far from the worst. Gens 1 and 2 are worse just by virtue of hardware limitations and theiir age.
