Every team has a certain "win condition" which is usually taking down a certain threat so that you either cannot break through their walls or they can just sweep. You must then always assume that the other player's every move is something to advance this goal. And your goal is to keep him from doing that while advancing you own strategy.
That's why there's a difference between thing like a late game sweeper, a wallbreaker and other offensive roles. It's all about setting up your win condition.
