If he was the player-character's father, why didn't GF make him the Hoenn champion, or at least the eighth gym leader? It would have been more climactic than those water faggots.

the most recent one is from flavor text in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon where if you investigate the garage , it clarifies that you DO INDEED have a father who exists

I guess the dad is never really given much thought at all. Which just makes the prospect of even HAVING a father in a Pokemon game that much more heavy.

That's how they getcha in Pokemon games; leave out certain aspects in the games for several years and then put them back in so they seem bigger than they really are

in your first playthrough as a kid those Slakings will probably wreck you
compare him to other 5th gym leaders, only other ones worth a damn were Fantina and Crasher Wake.

The reason for that is because in Japan the father basically never being home because he's working somewhere else is surprisingly common.
Also iirc the Kanto games reference Red's dad too.

Basically none of their dads are dead or whatever, just in another city working since it's easier to make money to support the family.

Fantina in Platinum is only the 3rd leader but god damn she's the toughest thing in that game. Haunter + Mismagius is brutal. Duskull, to a lesser extent since it can status you and bulk what you throw at it.

They set it up really early on, so to make you wait that long would make it very anticlimactic compared to defeating the world-threatening legendary or battling the guy who's been helping you a lot across the way.

Reminder that RS was the first game to make the legendary battle mandatory, something that would later become stale but hadn't yet, and that Wallace replacing Steven as champ in Emerald was a mistake.

Good point about the legendary battle being mandatory. RS was the first game to make the mystical-magical stuff the main plot of the game, for better or for worse. I thought changing the champion in the third version was an interesting twist, but Steven was just better than Wallace in general. At least Steven had a connection to Devon Corp. and partnered with you to set up him early in the game as being a significant character.
