Gen 4 really was the pinnacle of the "classic" pokemon artstyle.
Gen 5+ was when they started experimenting with the artstyle until they just settled with an animu look.

I think gen 4 was even it started going down hill with the too many details. But can agree it was the last that had a similar style.

Personally I loved the art style of Gen 5 the most. Maybe I just liked the artist's clean lines.

Gen 4 are the source and summit of the archetypal and most pleasant and valuable Pokémon aesthetics.

I'm hoping somehow these qualities make a glorious return. Platinum +hgss are a perfect combination of videogame aesthetics and quality. By no means perfect, but they are the best released so far. Add emerald to the experience and you have the trinity of pokemon games.

Gen 4 is a close second to gen 3 for the best overworld sprites, but I'm biased because of nostalgia. Gen 1 and 2 had the best artstyle.
