Sure, they're mechanically better than the originals in every way, and they've got a shitload of cool post-game content. Things in Johto are fleshed out, Kanto is fixed up, the lore is extended, there are brand new areas - I could go on for days. Pretty much EVERYTHING is better from a gameplay and worldbuilding point of view in HGSS.
...Except for the fact that they irreparably fucked up a lot of the atmosphere. I know it sounds like tooty-fruity nu-/vp/ "muh comfy/nostalgia" shitposting, but there were a handful of songs in the game that they absolutely BUTCHERED, Goldenrod being one of them. On top of that, they made dozens of smaller changes that really just changed a lot of the locales. As one small example: Why were Ilex Forest's bulbous trees swapped out for generic pines? It changes the atmosphere of the place entirely. The lighthouse looked dark and grimy in the original, like it hadn't been maintained for years, where now it looks pretty sleek and well-kept. Some of the most memorable moments of the originals for me, such as Claire's boulder-pushing lava gym, were just replaced with something completely different. The icing on the shit-cake is that they swapped out Kris for some literally-who new girl, and although I like the Giovanni/Silver connection, I thought rematching Giovanni in the Tohjo Falls was shit and kind of ruined his character.
So, yeah. Mixed feelings about HGSS. I've often thought about doing a "remix" ROM hack of them that keeps all the good new shit but addresses all of my autistic nostalgia nitpicks.
