"Higana" (ヒガナ, Zinnia's Japanese name) comes from Higanbana (彼岸花, the red spider lilly). It's a type of flower that it's often planted in cemeteries due to being poisonous to bugs and rats. In Hanakotoba these flowers are the memory of a loved one who passed away and you are never gonna see again. It's also called often the flower of heaven, flower of hell or flower of the dead. There are other myths and legends attached to it like the flower growing in the place you saw your loved one for the last time or around their graves. Their name contains the kaji for "shore" (岸).
"Shigana" (シガナ, Aster's Japanese name) would be like 此岸, which means something like "the other shore".
