It felt like you as the protagonist were pioneering something genuinely new and unique in Alola, whereas in other gens it felt like you were going through the motions and GF had tacked it on as a mandatory thing.
That being said, it did feel disjointed in SM because Poni Canyon served as the real 'Victory Road' so the area preceding the actual League lost a bit of hype. They corrected this in USUM, though, so whatever.
