True. All they needed to do was make Dark Void not work if used by Smeargle, or make it only work on one pokemon in doubles, the lowered accuracy as well makes it useless. There was no reason to debuff Gengar or Talonflame.

I have no idea why gengar caught their attention but not lando. Talonflame had it coming though but maybe if it didn't get nerfed there would be more lycanrocs around.

Because it was a Mega Gengar nerf. The idea was to take away its ability to get free switch-ins on ground attacks until it got bored of playing mind games and mega evolved.

Take into account now that gale wings got a slight buff with gale wings affecting z moves, and it would be even worse. Talonflame had practically the only priority z move (besides shit like prankster z nature power I think) and the strongest priority move in the game. That shit still working at full hp would be busted

Curse Body is what made Gengar drop to UU in SM you dumb fuck. Then Blacephalon just made it worse for Gengar, which could at least be a niche pick against things like scarf Landorus-T and other Earthquake users if it still had levitate.

No, it wasn't. It was the initial reaction to Cursed Body, along with new toy syndrome, that caused Gengar to drop. It quickly rose back to OU once people realized that losing Levitate in Terrains: the meta wasn't that bad.

What truly booted Gengar out of OU was Blacephalon doing everything it did, only better

Game Freak believes that the most powerful pokemon should be legendaries. Not all legendaries need to be good, but any regular pokemon that starts becoming too popular will get nerfed eventually. That could also be why mega stones are being phased out, but that just goes to show how quickly this could change.

Daily remember that GF didn't nerf Gengar. They only replaced Levitate with Cursed Body because Gengar touches the ground with its legs.
They don't give a fuck about any meta that exist.

when they do balancing things, they basically don't listen to what fans have to say about things or the changes they do, although they do look at VGC, and by look I mean they probably just watch it for a bit and isn't part of their consideration. There was an interview that explained their reasoning for changing things IIRC that was released last year.
They did decide that parental bond was too powerful though.
