So it seems like May is the best of both worlds, because she was designed around 2001-2002 based on current anime/videogame marketing trends at the time. They managed to get a nice balance with her design.
I also do love that her outfit is red. Her red clothes is something none of the other female companions have, red is a great color for girls.
