They probably did settle for ripping themselves off most of the time around Jirachi. I watched the Victini and aside from loving the victorious baby all I could think of was "that was the Manaphy movie wholesale".
Game Freak hasn't been giving them terribly interesting Pokemon to work with since Gen 3, though. I'm partial to Arceus and Deoxys- both funky features, let no one say otherwise- simply because they get interesting Pokemon and do kind of interesting things with them, rather than being Celebi + Forest Monster #9 or object of an ancient people #17. I pity whoever had to write a script around friggin' Volcanion and Magearna.
