Magmar is superior to its evolution, at least.
And Dragonite, though a disappointing follow-up to Dragonair, is superior to some later dragon designs like Palkia and Dialga, and especially Gen 7's luck dragon knock-off and goo-fetish dragon.

Practically every single videogame series stays about the same at its core for the every single release. This isn't just a Pokemon thing. And I don't think it's a bad thing. Franchises are successful because they're able to provide entertainment, even when simply remaking the source content, because that's just what people like.
