People expect that it can only work with procedural scaling which I personally don't like. Anything procedural is usually pretty shit compared to something handcrafted. I still prefer linear structure but with open areas ala Odyssey.
Hell I don't even like the idea of keeping gyms, I'm glad they got rid of them in SM and even if trials are pretty much the same, the positive reaction to it should show they can get away with changing up the formula for once.
Also I hate level systems and wish pokemon got rid of it in favor of something else. Random battles is outdated and should be replaced with physical encounters (actually seeing pokemon in the field or stuff like moving rustling grass).
I wouldn't mind pokemon games being 15-20hr games if they cut out the bloat. I like that SM makes it easier to skip trash trainers though so I waste less time on them.
I wouldn't mind and would even prefer they cut down on pokemon the next game would have. That way they could focus more on new pokemon and just bring back a very select few and give them all a lot more depth and detail. I don't see any point in keeping a living dex and I'm not so autistically attached to my favorites that I'd throw a fit if I can't use them.
