Honestly, if they do, by some wild stretch of Joe's imagination, make 2018 as today's Dialga/Palkia shilling can be interpreted, what's so wrong with it being Sinnoh remakes? They've already proven on multiple occasions they don't give a shit about patterns. It'll still be Gen VII, I imagine, and it'll be an easy segue onto the new high-definition hardware by being a remake that uses an older game as a base (less time wasted). The only room for error I see is spergs who'll claim it won't feel "right" if the first Switch game is anything but Gen VIII straight-up.
